Customized Islam

I know of people that do not necessarily follow the tenets of any one particular sect.
When they have a question they look up answers and follow those that are “best suited” to what they want to do.

How often do you find yourself customizing Islam?

Re: Customized Islam

They dont follow a sect? They do, their own self made one. :D

Re: Customized Islam

^ true.

Re: Customized Islam

We are all lead to believe that none of the sects is wrong. All Sects have based their beliefs, fiqh , rituals on interpretation of Quran , ahadees , or sunnah.
So if I say that I will follow only one sect because I think that this is only one which is right then indirectly I am saying that the beliefs, fiqh and rituals of the other sects are wrong or made up. Who am I or anybody else to decree that ?
What gives the right to one sect to enforce only their beleifs , fiqh and rituals as the only righteous ones and discredit others ?
I think as long as some fiqh , belief or ritual does not go against the basic tenants of Islam then nobody has the right to consider other person wrong , astray , munafiq , fasiq or fajir.

Re: Customized Islam

The idea behind difference of opinion is that:

"I believe I am right, but could be wrong and I believe you are wrong, but could be right ... hence I believe I have earned 2 rewards where you have earned 1"

And the "I" here is what qualified scholars are allowed to say ...

Re: Customized Islam

Yes this happens ... I think it is better than leading a life completely secularised from Islam ... or where ones decisions are abstract from considering the Islamic angle.

I however "do" what my fiqh books and scholars say and when discussing with others try to bring about the simplest common ground that is acceptable to the major schools as the basis for "others to do" ... this is because my principles require me to be strict on myself yet lenient on others.

Re: Customized Islam

I absolutely love this response. :k:

This is the very heart of it for me.
Simple things for simple minds. I am no great Alim or scholar and certainly I was a country bumpkin before I learned to read and write (my handwriting is still apalling). I never was very good at grasping the more complex ideas of our faith however I was always willing to learn and the fact is I was never alone.

All my life I have tried to keep my belief as simple and exact to the letter as possible. I most probably did not perfect this art but the struggle is in mastering the basics. The less steps to the goal the more certain you will reach it.

However like all the great art forms, and even sciences as well you have to follow by the rules, the codes and conventions that have been set out are at thier heart very simple. There is no need to try and bend things to suit your need, the system is allready more flexible than you could ever expect.

Re: Customized Islam

In the realm of faith, there is no single interpretation that can be considered valid. So long as the author himself is not present to expound on his own work, no one can assume to know what the original intention was, or is.

What we deem then to be valid is relative. Ultimately its based on who we are as individuals or society. So for a person (or society by extension) that is inherently liberal, the Koran and hadeeth will take on a liberal leaning, and vice versa with conservatives.

To rely to much on established "scholars" risks turning a deeply personal faith into one that is exceedingly esoteric and hence prone to the same inequities that befall any system that is left in the hands of a chosen few.

The best approach to Islam I believe, and indeed any system, is to keep in mind the very basic tenets that we all agree on. Equity and justice, avoiding harm, and pursuing the greatest good for all those in our dealings within our means. So long as we abide by these tenets, and establish that we will interpret our faith in pursuance of these ends, we are serving Islam.

God has gifted us with reason and logic. Employing these faculties in an sincere manner will answer many questions regardless of sect or creed.

Everything else is unknowable and is best left in the hands of the almighty. We as mortals can only do our best.

Re: Customized Islam

You write very well for a self-proclaimed late learner. Hand writing is a dying art anyways since the widespread use of computers. My own handwriting is pretty horrible.

"The best approach to ......... any system, is to keep in mind the very basic tenets that we all agree on. Equity and justice, avoiding harm, and pursuing the greatest good for all those in our dealings within our means."

This is indeed a good template - one can substitute any religion (or even no religion) and the statement stands on its own).

Re: Customized Islam

Thanks Mr Southie. I appreciate as always your appreciation.

Indeed, I believe all of humanity strives to meet these basic standards. These seem to be the common thread that binds us as a species, and lie at the heart of all faith, if we were but to look beyond the dogma.
