Customised Science Projects?

My son recently received a science project on sensors that can help you during an earthquake. Those sensors include the Earthquake resistant bed, a light sensor and a sound sensor. But the problem is, I cannot make the whole project for him because the first reason is that, I’m not an electrician. So, I was wondering if there’s anyone who knows some shop or some person who can make customised science projects? I found a shop named Advanced Electronics who makes these but I cannot seem to find this shop. This is really important and I need help.
Btw, I live in Karachi.

Re: Customised Science Projects?

well we have to page in people who are more science savvy. However one small thing, you or anyone can certainly help your son but its his project so let him do most of it. I'm sure he'll learn from his experience whether its successfully finished or no. @TLK @Monk @Theorist or anyone who can help?

Re: Customised Science Projects?

I agree with Sid. If you are hiring someone to do a school project, then it's not really a learning opportunity for him anymore.

My advice would be to maybe hire a tutor who can help him in the project, so your son could learn while having someone to guide him.

You can start with his teacher. Many teachers themselves do private tuition. Also, you can visit electronic market in Karachi. Go to a repair shop there. There are some very brilliant people working there who are self taught in electronics. Best option would be to go to engineering university electronic department and talk to some teachers who may recommend a geek student whom you can hire to work with your son.

Re: Customised Science Projects?

Google your idea. It is project of your son. You are not supposed to order it from other shop. He is the one who gather all information and you should provide logistic. His teacher should also guide him in constructing different parts.

Re: Customised Science Projects?

How old is your son and what is he studying?

Re: Customised Science Projects?

Like a human you need a brain and some sensors, like we have eyes, ears.
So lucky you these days you can get small computer for not too expensive price.

1-So look for arduino board.
2-Find some robotic but sensitive microphone.
3-I don't know if there is a sensor who could sensitive to tremors.

Then you have to connect those sensor to the board from first step and write some simple program.

And if you need to process audio that is a lot of math-ish work.
This is like graduate project. Or an advance hobby project.

Re: Customised Science Projects?

You know… put one pipe in wood vertically and hang another(little thinner) one inside it.
Two are not touching, but are very close.

And connect one cable to the outer pipe and another one to inner pipe.
When they touch complete circuit.

When circuit is complete, it turn led or some thing to begin with.
Or attach small speaker with with capacitor , that should make noise.

This my friend is your “hello world” earthquake machine 18 century style.

Two pipes would work in case of shock waves are stronger in y direction or x direction.
hmmm
you can call it zalzala-chime …
post the picture when you are done :flower2:

Re: Customised Science Projects?

Are you implying Mr. Monkie that when someone “touch” each other, there is a earthquake? Buahaha that’s certainly huge! I like it.
