Customer satisfaction?

So … one thing i’ve noticed alot and experienced myself as well, is how far does customer satisfaction go as far as being a makeup artist? I realize we have both customers and artists here as well, so both are welcome to reply…

This last summer I got my makeup done for a wedding at New Look… while i fully admit that the artist did a great job with the makeup (blended well, decent colors used, enhanced/complimented my eye shape and color etc) i personally didn’t like it (err too evil-aunty-eye-ish IMO but looked great in pics!) but even if i didn’t like it, i was able to look at her work objectively and actually appreciate it… A few ppl mentioned abt certain parlours or makeup artists is that they’re really b*tchy and don’t listen to the customer and do whatever they want…

I can understand it from both perspectives… especially for someone who is up and coming, they realize that the bride they send off will have lots of ppl wondering who did her makeup..and if her hair looks bad or the duputta is strange or worst of all the makeup is hideous, they will most likely lose potential customers as less ppl will recommend them. So they will do what they think looks right, rather than listen to the customer and I can understand why they get annoyed because really sometimes a customer can be totally clueless as to what will work for them! I know i was that way, thats why i am saying this…

I realize that an unnecessarily bad attitude (without the good work to back it up) can turn off almost any customer… but for someone who has a reputation, they wnat to keep it going… of course there are limits, like when the work is really horrid (its sloppy, doesnt complement skin tone at all, and unflattering) but aside from those exceptions, at what point do they draw the line between customer satisfaction and doing what THEY think will look better on the customer (like if customer wants to look chalky white when she’s not!)

Re: Customer satisfaction?

A wonderful topic Sara516 and here is the feed back from a professional makeup artistry service.
Since makeup is not an exact science, it is open to personal tastes and wants. Every client has their own view about what they feel good makeup is. And we respect that a lot.
However, there are times when certain clients forget the fact that a professional makeup artist is a professional in that field, and that his or her experience ensures great makeup not only in reality but in professional pictures too. (Not pictures taken by camera phones or point n shoot digital cameras that blast a direct flash on the face)
In North America a professional artist learns extensive studies on cosmetology (upto 1600 hours in class and lab), aesthetics color theory, face cuts, skin types and of course makeup application. And yes, talent and great work add to the final outcome which is professional grade makeup service.
Certain clients may insist assertively that they want the same crimson red eyecolor on their eyes that is on their dress not knowing that there are certain dyes used in makeup that are not safe around the eye area. As a professional, we do educate them- some are very receptive, others are not. Some girls want a glowing compexion look they see on magazine covers, we let them know that those are pictures taken in controlled lighting with extensive post production to make that look perfect for a cover- the same look when applied to a client would look like an oily face in pictures and in most digital cameras would result in highlight burns on the cheekbones, forehead and nose. Some clients understand, others choose to go to another service that is not as particular about the final results!
Makeup artistry services are a wonderful balance of what the client has in mind coupled with what the professional can offer. Certain liberties must be given to the artist, especially to ones with experience, certain decisions must be entrusted.... after all when you go to a surgeon, you do trust their professional expertise and dont tell them which artery to avoid just because you think it will be better.
Regards!
