How do you address current events with your little ones?
Especially when they are old enough to pick up on headlines.
My little one asked about Libya today and I had a great time explaining to her about dictatorship vs democracy, human rights and revolution. I managed to include what has happened in Egypt and ended our fifteen minute conversation with a prayer for all the countries that face heartless governments that do not care for their people, including Pakistan.
This was during our drive to school. On our way home I plan to re-open the discussion and see if she has any follow up thoughts…
My younger's daughter's therapist is from Egypt. My older daughter asked her what was going on there.
She explained the circumstances. I think she got a jist of it but didn't truely comprehend the political situation. She just wanted the people and pyramids to be safe. :)
I had to explain the republican versus democrats when the election was going on.
I am open to discussion but I have to find a kid friendly version for an explanation or else I lose them.
My older daughter has also suddenly become curious about world events, natural disasters, etc. She likes to know the whys and hows of everything. Surprisingly she is able to understand more that I can imagine. Or at least she pretends to.
