Experts say this is the worst food crisis for 20 years in Niger , which ranks as the second poorest country in the world.
“If the famine continues my family and I will die,” said 80-year-old Abdou Adamou, a farmer from Tondikiwindi , Niger . “We have nothing to survive on. There is no food, no property and no livestock.”
A further 1.5 million people in the north of neighbouring Mali are also affected
Dozens of villages have been abandoned as their hungry residents wander the desert in search of food. Some people head for the towns and cities, or even neighbouring countries.
Villagers gather leaves, berries and roots of wild plants to eat. Even these are becoming scarce in some areas, as so many people are relying on them for food.
Why do we think, talk and act as the media wants us to? What are we? Puppets? Who holds our strings? Media?
We give charity and aid to the affected until they are in the news, once the news become old and no one is talking about it in the news, we forget about it.
hareem, .. 'news' has become a ratings game, the report what sells, and they also focus on what is new, shock value, controversy etc are big sellers.
however, real news is out there, you just have to tracj multiple sources.
its not just news organizations, watch out islamic type groups as well, darfur is kinda missing in their pain points, and if there is tragedy elsewhere in the world, they could not be bothered.

You are probably in UK to be so focussed on Prince Harry. Across the pond, here in the US, people are struck by a major hurricane called Obamania right now. Hopefully life will slowly come back to normal on Wednesday. Till then, forget Niger or Mali, or even Gaza - its a 24/7 march towards the inauguration. My sympathies to all those who actually live in the Washington DC metro area or work near Capitol.
this is why it is so essential , to make sure that we do some darn good work which we must, in an effort to de emphasize whatever wrong, the media promotes.
^ Oh come on! Not every thing the (big bad) media promotes needs to be de-emphasized. Even mainstream media talks about many useful things.
Everyone has their own agendas. Just sift through them and find out more about things that interest you. With internet, media's hold over what information is fed to you is greately weakened, anyway.
I don't blame the media much, it can do what it has to do and that is selling news to the world.
We shouldn't let the media control our decisions and focus regarding the crisis and disasters in the world.
I don't remember if food crisis in Africa was ever such a big focal point of media (big newspapers and tv channels) , even big natural disasters like earthquake in Kashmir don't get as much publicity as the explosions in USA, Bali and Turkey or Israel's attacks on Palestine or Suicide bombings in Iraq.
Why do I see more news about terrorism either by muslims or by Israilis or other races than the natural disasters when the latter is more fatal?
That's why I want to decide myself whom to send money needs more rather than media telling me who I should help next.
I guess there is not much glamour in natural disasters therefore they don't get much attention. With bombings, attacks, etc atleast they can play the blame game for quite some time...
