Twice I’ve been to the store and bought a curling iron only to realize that in teh first one, it didn’t have a clamp and in the second one, the clamp is only an inch long and doesnt’ go up to the entire shaft…I relaly don’t want to go back to return it so I gotta figure out how to use it. The first one came with a thermal glove, but this one didn’t. 
How do I use it?

I never use the gloves that come with it. 
Show us a picture of the iron. Read the instruction on the box? youtube it?
don’t know if iron is different to a rod…I have a curling rod and it’s pretty easy to use it. It looks like this.

This is the one I bought…never used a curler without a clamp/handle..

Apparently all the rage these days are curling irons without the clamp. Because it doesn't give you a natural curl or something? That's why they sell you the glove so you don't burn your entire hand before you finish curling your hair.
