Thanks for clearing it up. I am not an economist so it is a bit difficult for me to grasp the difference between real GDP and PPP GDP. Can you elaborate how real or nominal GDP is different from PPP GDP?

PPP is useless for measuring the size of an economy. it means absolutely nothing.
adjusting GDP by using the PPP method simply accounts for purchasing power and reflects the fact that equivalent goods are, on average, cheaper in pakistan than in the US by a factor of five or whatever it is.
so it is only a useful measure (but still somewhat flawed) when stated as per capita GDP in order to evaluate the economy from a human development standpoint and can be used to assess living standard and quality of life...but not economic size and strength.
Actually my question is that if Pakistan spent 18 billion USD on military in the year 2005 which amounts to 4% of GDP (PPP),i.e. 450 billion USD. But if the real GDP of Pakistan is 100 or 120 billion USD then that figure of 18 billion USD would mean that Pakistan spent 18% of its GDP (Real) on military. Then why every encyclopedia and all other stats show that Pakistan spends 5% of its GDP on military?
Malika: I won't make a distinction between hindu muslim riots and shia sunni riots because identity politics, whether ethnic or religious leads to disaster in most of the cases and this isn't not specific to the subcontinent alone.
What did you mean by "identity politics"?
(Basques in Spain, Freesians in europe or Qubecois in Canada) However, the economic lot of a community together with education makes a great difference in determining the course of action that a people would choose and I think more than religion it is the political, the economic and institutional factors that play an important role in the provocation of such conflicts.
I agree with you on this because I do think that the riots happen because of lawlessness and poverty. Not having enough money to support one's family leads to frustration and people maybe use these community conflicts as a means to let out these emotions.
I just feel that if both countries would give education as much importance as they do to defense(army) it would be best in the long run.
I’m just wondering would better education mean a better economy?
I know for a fact that if every body is well educated then this would ultimately lead to a better political system because people would be better equipped to decide which candidate hae the best interest of the country in his/her mind. ----->
They would be less likely to vote for sleazy, corrupt politicians if they are well informed. This would also lead to lesser and lesser corruption which would lead to better laws that benefit the general public because then people would find legitamate ways of making money rather than taking the “back roads” of business.

More and more businesses in the two countries would mean more jobs for the general public which would help to relieve people’s frustrations and anger so ultimately even with so many different religions and cultures within a country there would be a minimum amount of riots and killings. Plus this would also mean the two countries wouldn’t have to spend so much on defense.
Better education definitely leads to better economy and also a better politics and society. If you look at India and Pakistan’s GDP 25% each is contributed by agriculture and industrial sector and the remaining 50% is contributed by trade and services sector. Though education also helps in agriculture and industry but its effect is much more pronounced in the trade and services sectors. If people are better educated not only in physical sciences but also in humanities and social sciences then they will have better interpersonal skills and also a better understanding of how to deal with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. And their managerial, entrepreneurial and administrative skills will also be better. Pakistan’s biggest asset is its human resources and if we can manage and utilize it properly and if they are better educated and equipped then we will see its effect in economy, politics and society.

what do we do about the fact that there are only corrupt politicians to vote for though? Education will just make the corrupt politicians intellectually better at being more corrupt. Isn't that why so many of the educated people feel it's useless to vote because it'll just be one corrupt politician replacing another corrupt one. There's no hope :(
