Would you do it?
Instead of a cutting a cake…is it better to just have an amazing dessert table?
Wouldnt it be more expensive and then you’d have to let go of your cake cutting ceremony?

Re: Cupcake/Candy Table in lieu of a Wedding Cake
i think its a nice idea but....i just wouldnt wanna forgo the cake cutting
Re: Cupcake/Candy Table in lieu of a Wedding Cake
We are thinking about this for the Valima.
Re: Cupcake/Candy Table in lieu of a Wedding Cake
You can still get a mini cake for the cutting part, and then place it at the very top of a cupcake stand with an assortment of cupcakes in colours matching your themeand nicely decorated. I love the idea! Plus I think cupcakes are easier to hand out rather than worrying about cake cutting costs.
Re: Cupcake/Candy Table in lieu of a Wedding Cake
^ Nice point right there Rani! The cake cutting fee would go out the window.
But which one would be more expensive? I would assume the cupcake table/candy table would be much more...
Re: Cupcake/Candy Table in lieu of a Wedding Cake
^ yup, that will be way more.
usually if you have 400 people, you really only need a cake for 200-300. with cupcakes you probably need MORE cupcakes than people, and they are more labor intensive. you could do mini cupcakes, but i don't know if it would really work out to be cheaper.
Re: Cupcake/Candy Table in lieu of a Wedding Cake
I went to a gora shaadi where the bride chose to forego the tradition of cake cutting!!! Amazing especially since we get this tradition from western culture! But this bride explained to me that she found the whole thing a bit overrated when compared to the entirety of the wedding ceremony, cocktail hour, and the reception itself . There are a lot of customs and wonderful moments throughout the entire day she told me. Instead of a cake, she chose to have an unbelievable selection of bite size desserts as well as a complete icecream sundae bar!!! It was amazing…there were 3 flavors of icecream with an attendant behind each selection. You told them what you wanted and they scooped it into your dish and then there were huge array of various toppings elegantly spread in various size containers throughout the rest of the table. Not only was it delicious… but it made her wedding unique and memorable.
I’m having a cake at my wedding and doing the traditional cake cutting… but only because there won’t be too much other entertainment or rasms going on. lol. But it seriously is crazy how expensive cakes are now a days when you order for a room full of hundreds of guests! And then there are the cake cutting charges itself… im lucky in that my hotel where my shaadi is - is paying for my cake and there is no extra charges for cutting and serving. When its for free..why pass it up? lol.
But my sisters friend …who is having double the number of guests at her wedding (close to 600)… is being charged $3.50 a slice for cutting and serving costs …
so unbelievable… if i were in her shoes I would forego the whole thing entirely…have an icecream bar.candy table. Even cupcakes can add up now a days.

thats what we did for my brothers wedding. we had a mini two tier cake for them to cut and then 3 varieties of cupcakes plus kulfi. it was a huge hit with our guests.
what you can also do is add in a sheet cake to cut back on how many cupcakes you will need. the sheet cake would be in the back and would come out already pre-sliced for guests to help themselves too at the dessert table. sheet cakes are much more economically priced than multi-tiered cakes or cupcakes. but really, the most important thing with whatever dessert you serve is make sure you go to as many tastings as possible! ;)

no, you're still ordering for about 75% of your guests if you are serving other dessert too. if you're serving only cupcakes as dessert, then yes, you'd need at least one per. but keep in mind, most cupcakes for weddings are pretty big and pretty iced and all that so i would highly doubt people would eat more than one. and to control sampling, don't have more than 3 flavours. the more options you have flavour-wise, the more people will take just to sample and likely waste. for my brother's wedding, we did mango lime, chocolate chip, and coconut cupcakes.

head to the dollar store or ikea for containers and to bulk barn for the candy and it'll come out pretty cheap all in all for the candy part of the dessert table.

Hm. Okay. I will mention that to my brother. :D There will definitely be other desserts, like gulab jamun and kolfi or something.

Re: Cupcake/Candy Table in lieu of a Wedding Cake
I'm having a cake but I'm not cutting it - lame right?
Re: Cupcake/Candy Table in lieu of a Wedding Cake
Why's that? ^
Re: Cupcake/Candy Table in lieu of a Wedding Cake
personally for myself, i never wanted to cut my cake - didnt like the attention. but my sister insisted on it. lucky for me, there was a mishap with the cake when it was being taken to the hall.
phew for me.
i like the idea of one small cake for the cake cutting and then cupcakes.
u coudl also have a cupcake stand/tree at each table with enough cupcakes for each guest sitting at the table. u can combine it with ur table centrepieces.
Re: Cupcake/Candy Table in lieu of a Wedding Cake
The candy buffets are a great idea, but i think they should be combined with the cake.
Re: Cupcake/Candy Table in lieu of a Wedding Cake
its getting old now. i think the latest trend was a table of mini pies. mmm… pies…
