cup & spoon

My daughter’s dr has told me to give her milk with cup and spoon rather than with bottle. He even told me that I should be breast feeding her now if I don’t have how can I ? it’s not purposefully that I don’t give her my milk. He said companies want to sell bottles that why they promote it otherwise we should feed with cup and spoon. I told him that I wash bottles with boiled filtered water and then sterilise them he said that Karachi ka to pani hi ganda hai. Now from which water I would be washing cup & spoon?

I didn’t want to go into detail of my personal life because then they start asking personal questions. But being a single parent and a working mother I cannot manage time to feed her with cup and spoon. My mom despite her not so good health do so much to take care of the baby and to run the house hold.

is it really bad to feed your baby with a bottle ?

Re: cup & spoon

I have never before heard about feeding a few month old baby with a cup and a spoon. I would suggest you see a different Dr? Someone who is recommended?

If you don't have any breastmilk, then you cannot breastfeed, just doesn't make sense. Yes of course baby milk companies want to promote their stuff, but at the end of the day, when you have no option, you have to go with the bottle.

What reason does Dr give for cup and spoon? Is it to develope the speech / swallowing muscles? Chemicals in plastic bottles?

Think of all the other babies who have been bottle fed in Karachi, nothing happened to them, hopefully your baby will be fine also, inshallah.

Re: cup & spoon

He said teat of bottle can get germs because at time it just falls and rolls over.

Well I use a sterilise bottle for my baby every time :(

Re: cup & spoon

If you sterilize the teat, it should be fine. Just dry it in a position where it won't roll over, and when baby is drinking from the bottle you will be watching anyway.

Usually Dr's say it is good to expose children to dirt, it builds their immunity.

Don't know why you Dr is being a bit strange.

Re: cup & spoon

your doc is strange.
babies under 1 year can not really drink with cups other than some sips but its not the same.

I am breastfeeding but we do one bottle of formula before going to bed, so that she is full and doesnt wake.

Yesterday I started with a plastic cup, mind you turned 7 months today and she drank water, which is okay in between but I would not replace the bottle with a cup so soon.

Re: cup & spoon

Very strange doc!! I've never heard of such a thing in my life!!

Infants have been drinking from bottles for decades the world over and I'd bet that not one of us has ever heard of a problem due to germs on the teat. Sheesh, I just washed bottles and teats didnt sterilize and my boys didnt get sick.

Can you go to a different doc?

Re: cup & spoon

Yes Mamaof3 I am have searched another DR for her. My friend take her 2 year old to him.

Re: cup & spoon

He sounds weird. If you are sterlising everything than dont worry. She will let you know herself when she is ready to drink from a cup, eat with a spoon etc.

Re: cup & spoon

i thikn you have a traditional doctor at ure hands diamond

in my family, mothers dont want their babies to get used to the rubber teat so they breast feed if they can, other wise babies are fed with spoon and cup :D and babies drink it. the transition from spoon to cup and then proper adult glass is very fast and smooth

but totally unecessary

as you said.. it takes forever! dont listen to him, buy ure baby a bottle and feed away.
