we had this interesting debate on culture and religion being same or not the other day in the class.
i believe they are two different things. there are so many different kinds of culture. take islamic world or instance.. culture is different in arabic countries than in south asia. but religion is the same.
what do u guyz think about it?.. is there a line between these two or not?
i think race and ethnic group above all color
will determine rather than religen in a real
world. what a syrian muslim to do with
a muslims living in bihari village?

It is correct that these are two different things and people were made big time confused about these two words by Mullas of every religion. Some of them did nasty job in Islam as well by providing their details or explanations full of there personal emotions and made illusion that Almighty Allah was sort of words and they are the one to submit explanation to the people.
God, the Most Gracious, Most Merciful, insists on making His religion easy, practical and enjoyable for His true believers. God also told us that those who reject Him or His books are making life miserable for themselves and for their loved ones who follow in their footsteps.
He reminds us in the Quran that He has placed no hardship on us in practicing our religion (see Quran 22:78)
The Quran is a complete book, See Quran 6:19,38,114, 115, 12:111 and 50:45.
Remember that when God says that His book is complete, it means 100% complete.
The Quran is perfect; no mistakes, no falsehood, no nonsense. See Quran 41:42,12:40, 30:30, 30:43 and 98:5
The Quran is detailed, and when God says He detailed His book it means FULLY detailed. God does not do half jobs. See Quran 6:114, 7:52, 11:1, 41:3, 10:37 and 12:111
God does not need any addition to His book. God teaches us in the Quran that He does not run out of words and that if He so willed He could have given us hundreds, thousands or millions of books besides the Quran (see Quran 18:109). Since the Quran is complete, perfect and fully detailed, God did not give us any more books.
God calls on His true believers to make sure not to fall in the trap of idol-worship by following the words of the scholars instead of the words of God. See Quran 9:31
God calls those who prohibit what He did not prohibit, aggressors, liars and idol-worshipers. Idol-worship is the only unforgivable sin, if maintained till death. See Quran 5:87, 9:37, 7:32, 6:119, 6:140 and 10:59.
Now, if we ask ourselves that what is told to us and what are we doing? Are we acting on Religion or a tradition of old forefathers?
Every year, during the last month of the Islamic calendar, more than 1 million Muslims make a pilgrimage, or hajj, to Mecca. The city’s location on several trade routes has made it commercially important since ancient times. Mecca was a religious center before the time of Muhammad, and several holy sites within the sacred precincts of the great mosque, called al-Haram, had religious significance in pre-Islamic times. The Kaaba (or Caaba), a windowless cube-shaped building in the courtyard of the mosque, is believed to have been built by the Hebrew patriarch Abraham. In the southeastern corner of the Kaaba is the Black Stone, supposedly given to Abraham by the angel Gabriel. Also within the precincts of the mosque is the sacred well, called the Zamzam (Zemzem), which was reputedly used by Hagar, mother of Abraham’s son Ishmael. The city is first mentioned by the Alexandrian geographer Ptolemy, who in the 2nd century AD called it Macoraba. http://encarta.msn.com/find/Concise.asp?ti=06540000
Culture and Religion have become two different things. I don’t think there’s any Islamic country in the world today, which consists of an Islamic culture. Take Saudi for example, where Islam began, I mean they have a current culture where all the rich people have wine at home and the women are still treated badly, both of the things aren’t in Islam.
Than we have our beloved country, which was created on the basis of Islam for the muslims of India, but today, the same country has such a bad human rights record when it comes to the treatment of women, which is something non-existence in the religion. There are numorous examples which can be given but these are a couple which I can think from the top of my head.
** PM ** what do you mean by “culture derives from one’s religion” can you expand on that.
