if u look at it from an evolutionary perspective, what set humans apart from other speices is CULTURE. The fact that certain monkeys stopped using all fours and went to using two feet led them to free their hands and that resulted in the free hands being used to grab food and TOOL MAKING. this very tool making is a sort of CULTURE that ensured their survival.
any sort of culture among a certain people is based on lots of factors, one of them being the environment the people exist in. their culture is shaped around their environment and leads to the flourishing of that particular society's economy. ill give u an example of the islands in the Pacific. there are polynesian and micronesian islands who's culture is based on a very important act called "feasting" and "re-distribution" where the chiefs perform the act of constantly giving and taking food and other goods to each other. Unlike the american culture, where the more u have ...the more status u get.....in these islands status is marked by how much u GIVE!.....as a result...no one goes hungry in these islands...
another interesting feature of their culture is the fact that they marry into other tribes and islands ..reason?....every few years these islands are hit by typhoons and tsunamis...so it is important for them to have relations with people on other islands so that if one island is going to be hit...those from different islands will welcome them with open arms and vice versa) .... therefore.....they cannot imagine to survive by being materialistic and isolated from community...
just two examples of the features of their culture that ensures their survival and keeps their economy functioning.

I am a novice on this subject but still I would like to offer my views . I believe that the capacity to produce different kinds of sounds, which later gave rise to advanced communication skill or language gave a tremendous evolutionary advantage over other species. When there was a competition between different human species then culture played a decisive role to make homo sapiens (Current human specy) the master of this planet. Please correct me if I am wrong.
