Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis

Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis

Long and short of it is that mohajir is the least offensive of the indignities heaped upon the immigrants from India and the ‘mohajirs’ adopted it as thier own. It was better than makkar (my favorite), hindustoRa, panah-geeRa, and last but not least hindustani – oft used moniker by Punjabis.

Why the need to adopt an ethnic “identity”? The other ethnic groups in Pakistan are extremely ethnocentric and caste conscious and refering to yourself as merely Pakistani was just not enough.

All these discussion about ‘Urdu speakers’ started because of Zakk’s initial query about “hierarchies” among ‘Urdu speakers’ so that should give you an idea.

Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis

punjabis swear at your face... urdu speaking people are usually polite enough to make fun of you on your back
punjabis eat zarda (sweet rice) before meals... urdu speaking people eat it like normal people, that is, after meals.
Punjabs are loud , obnoxious and smell horrible... urdu speakers are very polite, well behaved and smell like pot porri.

Can u think of any more differences?. I am sure there are a lot more but its not culture that is different, the differences seem to come from the up bringing. Its all about manners and respect that urdu speakers are so used of giving and recieving. :)

LI, I had not even seen Zakk's thread, it was an issue I'd wanted to raise for a while. Thanks for pointing it out.

Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis

too much stereotyping...my best friends were always from other ethnic backgrounds...ppl r what they want to be...they do get influenced by what they see around them or in their families but they can also rebel against the customs upheld by their immediate family memebers...so theres no point in stereotyping about diff ethnicities...ur ideas make u..n most ppl from south asia who talk abt their ethnicity n caste r nothing but 'hollow'..no offence..but they've nothing better to recommend to themselves..

Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis

Well Whimsy, there's really nothing wrong with knowing where you came from and what the practices of your forefathers were. There are a multitude of ethnicities out there - not being aware of them also makes you somewhat ignorant don't you think?

And to tell you the truth, I've never even had a Pakistani friend until I arrived on this board!

Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis

i dont know any general differences but yea ofcourse i have met some punjabi families and i went like oh god..help me and same with karachites.. but some punjabis are the nicest ppl alive.. it depends on each and every family... dere are lil differences like food.. clothing.. and sense of style... and lang.. uff if i could ever learn it..

Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis

You need to remove your mask to see some of these…Urdu speakings are more open minded & educated…as compared to rural Punjabis..
