Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
Numerous differences, prolly thats why we don't know many karachites on a family basis.
Yeah hospitality, mindset, skin tone, language, body structure lol.. all are a few of the differences..
Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
a question... isnt the term mohajir used for any immigrant be it in pakistan or other country...why do we only refer to ppl who migrated from india to pakistan as mohajirs?
one example is the mohajireen and ansars in Prophet Mohammad's (P.B.U.H) time ...people who migrated from mecca to madinah were mohajirs..
Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
there are plenty of differences.. biggest being mentality (in my opinion and experience)... most of my dealings have been with punjabis living in the city but with close ties with their villages
and the food.. ive never been able to down punjabi food
Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
what are u guys talking about? whats wrong with punjabi food? its awesome! nice and spicy...my friends (from khi), their dishes are pretty bland....lahore is famous for their food street..i havent heard of a karachi food street...
and as for skin colour...all of pakistan is mixed...some darks, some lights..doenst matter where u go....there are plenty of light-skinned colour folks in punjab, and plenty of dark skin colour pple in urdu speaking areas..
frankly i dont think there is any difference..we're all pakis, just be proud of that..
Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
many differences...although i had many Punjabi friends at school and i spent lot of time with them...i would still feel the difference everytime they speak urdu with me or when we hung around...and i am talking about 100% lahories who lived Lahore for long time. For example, in the begining i would not understand their jokes and humour but later i got some sense of punjabi humour....its all good but i never find it funny even when i understand it.. .on the other hand i prefer Urdu language humour as i grew up with it. I am watching old drama Parosi nowadays....it seems like they are trying to copy off Tanhiyyaa...everything looks the same but half of actors are punjabi and i don't find it funny to watch as it is supposed to be a urdu comedy but all humour looks punjabi. Maybe i will...if i would watch it from a punjabi perspective. I guess there are lot of differences. Those people who were not brought up with strick urdu up bringing would not see a difference.
Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
On the other hand i love the multiculturism in Pakistan. And it is due to all these differences in cultures..which all comes under one country. :) Any time i am ready to wear sindhi dress or try sindhi food or punjabi food....sometimes we have so many differences, we don't have to look around out side Pakistan to learn about other cultures. There is soo much to learn right here in home.
Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
ermm.. its the other way around… punjabi food i find too bland and not at all spicy… we have to remember to tone down the mirchay whenever we have punjabi ppl over .. maybe this is only true for punjabis from isloo and the villages surrounding it… like gujranwala..
p.s) karachi doesn have a food street.. we have 2 places of the same kind .. Mela and Lal Qilla.. try it out
Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
Gotta agree with khawateen. Punjabi food I find is too bland and no matter how much spices they try to add, it just doesn't taste the same. I'm speaking from experience that I've had eating out at restaurants and at other peoples' houses. I've not even once enjoyed the food. There's something different about the food made in Karachi. Then again I have a partial delhi background, so alhamdulillah we make great food.
Jal_pari, humour and drama is another thing where I would have to agree with you. I usually don't watch their sitcoms or dramas as I never find them entertaining. Dramas I find very slow-paced, as compared to Karachi's and the sitcoms I find are just very different for my liking.
Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
I love Lahori food - it's great, simple and tasty. They don't overdo the spices. I've always preferredf palao to biryani. Anyway, I didn't even realise there was a big difference when it came to food.
Jal Pari thats interesting. Thanks for your insight everyone. Although I could do with something of a bit more substance rather than just food, humour and language. :)
Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
really?..about the food? well everyone I know that is punjabi (here in GTA) makes amazing food (esp my mom!!)..but the khi folks food are pretty bland..with the spiciness of the food..i dont htink it has to do with regions then..i think more based on the families (whether someone has ulcers, or acquired taste..etc)...but someone here mentinoed the differenct cultures..like clothing..i like that as well...being a punjabi..on one of my cousins dholki parties, the theme was all us younger chicks to dress like pathans (those kinds of frocks..etc) and to do a dance together...well, to make the story short..it didnt end up working ..only 2 chicks actualy had the dress already...but off track...
but one of the major difference b/w a punjabi and a urdu person...is that punjabi pple are pretty loud whenthey talk..i dont know if they do that on purpose, but i get an earache....
Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
True. I notice the karachi side - they add about as many spices as they can find and tons of oil !!! But the Punjabi side adds “just enough” spices, yet the food is great. Theres not a big big difference though.
Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
sadiya :D .. here it goes.. these are all from my exp with punjabis.. doesnt have to be true for the whole race..
punjabi men ive found to be stone hearted and uncaring (for women kind) they are excellent for everyone else BUT the women in their own family.. especially their wives and daughters...
my dad's punjabi friends keep on tellin him to show women in our family their places.. to quit being a sissy... my dad on the other hands tells them to be REAL men and respect the women and their minds.. they arent just baby producing machines.... punjabi men are so down to earth and hospitable but ive seen this usually come at the expense of their family life...
example would be zia uncle.. he always has ppl over, he is funny and great with us kids.. but now that i have grown up and started to sit in women gatherings.. i get to hear the other side of the story.. aunty would be sick, his kids would be havin exams .. not perfect tiem to host a party..but he would do just that! as logn as he is happy.. taht is all taht matters .. this isnt just for his family.. ive seen this with about all 8 punjabi families i have grown up with....
urdu speaking men are way more calm with their women.. a bit more caring too.. i wouldnt think much of it all as this depends on person to person... but when a large group of women (punjabans) put down their own men for being uncaring and indifferent to their and their childrens needs.. it does make u sit up and take notice...
this is the one of the major issues for me.. especially after seeing my friend go thru this ordeal with her husband (both are punjabis and highly educated)... u get to see it a bit more personally... and then 2 of my phuppos were married to punjabis.. same problem...
BUT.. im happy to say ive met ONE punjabi guy who has proven me wrong .. but then my mom says that's cuz his naniyaal is from delhi :D
Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
I don't know many Urdu speaking people but those that I do know, they're very funny, always cracking jokes. They are also not very segregated, i.e. the women sit with the men. Punjabis (including us, from Lahore) are very laraka haha, the women are outspoken and loud, love food, love to talk whereas I've seen the Punjabi men be more serious and just talk about politics and work related stuff when they get together. Pubjabi men don't make for good friendship material. But I see them as "fiercely caring", they are more likely to tip off your rapist's head, stuff like that.
I also think Punjabi humor is more crass, probably reflecting less education. Punjabis love to make fun of others. In my gaon, everyone has a nickname and this poor woman is called "Darri". I don't understand Urdu speaking humor though.
In terms of physical differences, Urdu speaking people are darker. Punjabis are taller but their women heavier. Just what I've consistently seen.
