Re: Cultural differences between Urdu-speaking people and Punjabis
Long and short of it is that mohajir is the least offensive of the indignities heaped upon the immigrants from India and the ‘mohajirs’ adopted it as thier own. It was better than makkar (my favorite), hindustoRa, panah-geeRa, and last but not least hindustani – oft used moniker by Punjabis.
Why the need to adopt an ethnic “identity”? The other ethnic groups in Pakistan are extremely ethnocentric and caste conscious and refering to yourself as merely Pakistani was just not enough.
All these discussion about ‘Urdu speakers’ started because of Zakk’s initial query about “hierarchies” among ‘Urdu speakers’ so that should give you an idea.
