Cultural belief in black magic

I’ve heard and read quite a few things regarding the strong and quite prevalent belief in black magic on the subcontinent and the belief in other cultures and noticed something. In other Muslim cultures, the belief in black magic isn’t as prevalent as it is on the subcontinent. While the belief is there (as it is stated in the Quran), it is not as prevalent a fixture in society or as commonly blamed common misfortunes that occur.

In contrast, I’ve noticed that on the subcontinent (and even among those from the subcontinent living abroad) black magic is commonly touted as the cause of a variety of problems such as family problems, marital discord, health issues, infertility, death in the family, and financial woes. And before anyone says that it is only the poor and uneducated that believe in such things, I’d like to state that this isn’t true. I’ve seen educated, upper middle class people cite black magic (“jadoo”) as the cause of their misfortunes and resort to some rather odd things to “get rid of it.”

What do you guys think? Why is black magic so often blamed for everyday misfortunes in some cultures? What have you heard/observed regarding belief in black magic in the different cultures?

Re: Cultural belief in black magic

Black magic does exist.

In subcontinent, amil baba are major cause of most life and relationships problem. Uneducated or ignorant people take amil babas opinion and believe them that they are right.

Re: Cultural belief in black magic

Yes, it does. It is stated in the Quran. I do not question its existence. What I do question is if it is really as common as people make it out to be. The manner in which some people talk about it and blame it for common misfortunes makes it sound as if every Tom, Dick, and Harry is doing black magic on their acquaintances.

Question, what are amil babas?

Re: Cultural belief in black magic

Loss in business, unemployment, relationship problems, children, love marriages, finding partner most common problems… one can go through…

The person who is under above circumstances may think rationally or irrationally… may blame to black magic… and in some circumstances…Jadoo or Magic might be the cause… :hmmm:

Re: Cultural belief in black magic

So what is the origin of belief in black magic in sub-continent? Is it Bengal's kala jadu (which probably got roots in Hindu mythology) or it got some foreign influences as well.

Many Muslim rulers of India had a frim belief in magic, etc the most infamous being Humayon whose death is also linked with astronomical activity.

Re: Cultural belief in black magic

Amil baba… Amil is the one who do such activity… recite magic text… pin the dolls… knot in rope… etc …

baba is baba… :hmmm:

Re: Cultural belief in black magic

Don't know why it's so prevalent in our culture but I think it's just as common (if not more) in African Muslim cultures as well..

Re: Cultural belief in black magic

^Interestingly though, many African Muslim cultures, particularly those in West Africa, practice Islam alongside other traditional beliefs, most often voodoo or ancestor worship, so that may explain the prevalence in those cultures.

Re: Cultural belief in black magic

I know black magic exist but I have firm belief that everything that happens in this universe whether it is good or evil happens by the will, decree and preordainment of ALLAH SWT.
