Criteria for selecting your employer

What is your criteria for selecting a company as your employer interms of company size, environment etc. I’m not asking about direct job related criteria (job responsibility) though. I want to change my job so looking for some advice.

**What should i observe in a company?? should I look for the similar things that I looked last time (see below)?? **
what is your experience, working in a corp or a giant?
what is your experience working for a small company?

A couple of the reasons, that made me decide working for my present employer were,

  1. its a small company of about 63-65 employees. so i thought that it would be easier for me to show my presence - more chances were that my upper mgmt would know what i was doing, how was I at my work.
    And it worked.

  2. It was my first job so ofcourse not a Vice President sorta work but I was hired by my company’s CEO to work direct under him. And I thought of it as great opportunity. Ofcourse, when the company’s decision maker checks your work and really starts trusting you etc, its the best thing for your career growth. Getting promoted is easier. The VPs or big managers are not involved so less chances of office politics etc.
    And it worked too.

So these things worked for me. I started getting big projects from the beginning and etc etc. Now I am considered to be an imp employee of this company.
A few things changed though - the CEO retired, the hierarchy chart was changed and there was a Dept. Mgr above me and a VP above us. I was told that the reason of my colleague to be promoted as a Dept. Mgr was her seniority (# of years) in this company. Ok. I feel that its ridiculous to promote someone on the bases of the numbers of years but not the quality of your work. I really don’t care whatever changes they make.
But my problem is that now my authority level is reduced (i work as a product mgr. I need certain authority to make certain decisions), am the victum of office politics (I’ve been given stupid stuff sometimes that stops me to work on the things that are more imp, now my work goes to upper mgmt via dept. mgr (yea, sometimes with the stamp of her name).
I talked to the new CEO and my VP - nothing has changed even though they promised. I am sure, they know what I mean but they don’t wanna change the things around - thats another story.

Overall, things are not that bad here but I don’t feel that am gonna get much chances here. I think, am in a hurry of going up & up.

Now I’m thinking of changing my job as I have some experience, I feel comfortable and ready to go up in the hierarchy, better salary or atleast away from the stupid politics.
Plz advice. Thanks.
… and am writing it while sitting in my office :dixsi:

Re: Criteria for selecting your employer

I just got a pm from your CEO to tell you that you are fired :(

Re: Criteria for selecting your employer

a wise person once said..
dont just focus on what you are running away from
but also
what you are running towards.

it depends on what you want to do. One of my pals was working in smaller ocmpanies and exposure was good, but then when things got bad it was tough visibility was not always good and then stability could be an issue. My advise t him was to find a big company and just go hide in it, get some stability, and then poke his head up to gain visibility. It worked for him.

There are small extremely red-tape infested companies, and there are some very large but flexible companies. try to find one that meets your current goals..

Re: Criteria for selecting your employer

Thanks. It makes sense. i knew, i would get something good from you.

so I should look for something to gain more experience in my field (a big company sounds better as per your advice). Once experienced, things would start working out.

Question: how many years of experience is considered to be good enough in corp. environment. I don't believe in the time limit though - it depends, how quick someone can learn and adopt.

Re: Criteria for selecting your employer

of years is a double edged sword...too few may make u look like a novice not good nuff for critical stuff, and many years but not much upward mobility may make you look like a has been or a mediocre player not right for critical stuff.

the question is a little vague..what do u ant to do in corp world? I would say 3-5 years experience would be nuff for you to get a position and move up in a good company

Re: Criteria for selecting your employer

^^
Thanks.
I'll complete my 3 years in a couple of months. I'm gonna look for another job then because I'm comfortable & ready to move up.
My present company is doing great in its own niche. I'm waiting for a few changes in the mgmt. Based on those changes, I'll decide to quit or stay.
