Cricket Will Help Me Deal With Tragedy
Jan 7, 2007 | Younis Khan
It’s been a very sad time for me and my family after my brother passed away but I’m hoping cricket will help me to get through this difficult time in my life.
Farman Ali Khan was only 39 when he was involved in a tragic car accident in Germany last month. And it was only just over a year ago that I also lost another of my older brothers Mohammed Sharif Khan, and my father shortly before that.
It’s very difficult to know that I have lost two brothers in the last year. Everybody expects you to go on to 60, 70 or even 90 but to lose them in their 30’s and 40’s is very hard. The memories I have with them are very special to me.
My team-mates have been very supportive and phoned me when I was at home with my family. They have all been understanding and kind and I am grateful for their friendship.
I would have taken worship at the Haj in Saudi Arabia with my mother and two brothers but because of the South Africa tour I missed it to come here but it is ok as my mother is being well looked after by my brothers. We Pathans are very loyal to one another, especially at times like this, and I know my family will have plenty of support in Pakistan while I am away.
I am trying to focus on my cricket in South Africa and it will help me to take my mind off the sadness. It is important that I concentrate on cricket as we have the World Cup in two months and that is why I have to focus on my game.
It was nice to start my tour of South Africa with a few runs (76) and for the team to start well also. After what feels like a long time out of the game, I felt good. It’s really good for the confidence of the team to have had a first day like that (scoring over 400). Every batsman got runs.
It’s just as well we started on the front foot because we have only a few days before the first Test. I’m confident we can do better than India, who narrowly lost the series here.
We have a strong and well balanced squad and the bowlers in particular are looking good. Asif is in some good nick, so is Umar Gul , Shahid Nazir and especially Rana Naved.
I’ll be writing again soon. YK.

touchy indeed, He's been thru a lot lately, losing father & two brothers at a relatively young age

Younis seems to have great inner strength and self-belief which should keep him in good stead for his future assignments esp. captaincy.

We all admire him. Coming from a regular background (without sifaarish) and making a place in the team is achievment itself. He had to listen to a lot of critism - which only made him stronger and better. We have seen unreliable, incosistent players in our team too but because of their families or glamour etc etc, they don't have to face that much hardship.

But he made a terrible miskate of rejecting the captian position and holding a press conference. He surely was bothered, was pissed off. I am sure he was given the tough time (with his hands tied) but he could be more strategic.
We lost a good captian - most probably, we won't be offered that again.
