This is actually 22 years old (1989). Wasim was 23 then
The great thing about this is that Wasim is diabetic and still so strong..

Re: Cricket Videos Thread
That is even more incredible - Ovett must have been ~ 34 years - so still at the top of his game. That is some fitness Wasim Akram had to beat a world class middle distance runner in this gruelling contest.
Good for Wasim - wishng him lambee, healthy umar.

"*Waqar Younis to Cullinan *(South African batsman)
This was not reverse swing but movement off the wicket"
My limited understanding of bowling:
the way you hold the ball along the seam, and point the shiny surface to slip or elsewhere dictates swing in the air. (No idea how reverse swing is done). But what makes the ball swing off the wicket - does it depend on how the ball lands? So is that just chance or can the bowler control direction and degree of swing off the wicket. This ball brok bacl or swung back visciouly - poor batsman had no chance
Re: Cricket Videos Thread
That was a leg-cutter not inswing or reverse swing.
As per my understanding:
A- Traditional Swing: ball swings away from the shiny surface
Outswing: (shiny side facing in or towards batsman)
http://www.cricketupdates.org/how-to-bowl-an-outswinger-in-cricket.html
Inswing: (shiny side facing out or towards slip fielders)
http://www.cricketupdates.org/how-to-bowl-an-inswinger-in-cricket.html
**B- Reverse Swing: **ball swings into shiny surface
With reverse swing the exact opposite happens (i.e. opposite of traditional outswing happens), ball moves towards the shiny side of the ball, and it tends to move more if you use saliva to shine the ball (its perfectly legal) and this makes the shiny side heavier, accentuating the reverse swing effect.
Reverse swing is encouraged by the constant polishing of one side of the ball by members of the fielding team, while allowing the opposite side to deteriorate through wear and tear.
Importantly you have to be able to bowl at speeds of around 80 mph
http://www.cricketupdates.org/how-to-bowl-a-reverse-swing-in-cricket.html
**
C- Movement off the seam/wicket:** i.e. leg-cutter, off-cutter
The ball is deliberately bowled on to its seam, to cause a random deviation off the wicket. Bowler simply bowls with the seam upright, hoping for movement one way or the other.
This ‘seam up’ cricket ball grip is designed to give the bowler the best chance of creating movement off the pitch when the ball bounces. Aside from gripping a cricket ball, make sure your wrist is positioned behind the ball – this will help you keep the seam vertical as the ball is delivered, with the objective of landing the ball on the wicket with the seam as upright as possible.

^ Thanks GA - this was very informative. OK - so when ball hits the ground and moves, it is called a cutter. By leg cutter, is movement towards the right handed batsman - and for off cutter away from right handed batsman?
Re: Cricket Videos Thread
Imran Khan does have a way with words - his story telling ability is realy entertaining.
Did not know about the 1987 series - had stopped following cricket1986+ - so it was all new to me. the delivery to Richards - he told the story so well - it was like we were there watching the game.
Looks like he is all for change when it comes to umpiring.
He was a sportsman - as the recall of Srikanth testifies.
I think he was sarcastic when he mentioned - the Engkish said when your umpires make wrong decisions they cheat, when ours make wrong decision, it is just a mistake.
He is right when he says Test cricket standard has deteriorated. And - a good test batsman can do well in one day cricket, but reverse not always true. The cream resides in Test cricket.
