Cricket in Afghanistan

The ECB has teamed up with cricket fans in the British Embassy in Kabul to appeal for desperately needed equipment for club players in Afghanistan.

Despite the appalling problems suffered by the country - there has been war in Afghanistan almost continuously for the past 23 years – the game continues to prosper, and is a welcome relief for the thriving and growing community of cricketers.

Many agencies are currently trying to rebuild the country, the economy and the infrastructure. And the contribution of some kit that is unused or un-needed at home could help Afghans enjoy their new-found free time, playing the great game.

Many Afghans learnt cricket whilst refugees in Pakistan. The sport is now played by many people in Afghanistan; indeed 15 of the 29 provinces have sides. There are 40 clubs in Kabul alone – but while these cricketers are very keen they are desperately short of equipment.

Andrew Banks, a keen cricket fan who works in the British Embassy in Kabul, has been discussing the issue with the Afghan Cricket Board - and the ECB has agreed to try and coordinate an appeal to help.

Any old kit that you or your Club might have kicking around could be of use: that includes any old bats, balls, wickets, gloves, pads, indeed anything that the Afghans can use to play cricket.

The Embassy in Kabul has made arrangements with the Royal Logistics Corp to use their postal transport to Afghanistan, so the cost of sending anything that you might have will be no more than the cost of sending a parcel within the UK.

If you are able to help, the address to send kit to is:
