Cricket Diplomacy! Murali disappointed with IPL ruling

We are getting good at it…

CHENNAI: With anti-Sri Lankan sentiments being whipped up in Tamil Nadu, chief minister J Jayalalithaa said on Tuesday that her government will not permit IPL matches in Chennai that involve Sri Lankan players, umpires and even support staff for the event.

“In view of the popular antipathy and anger in Tamil Nadu against the actions of the government of Sri Lanka, the state government is of the view that IPL matches involving Sri Lankan players, umpires and other officials should not be played in Tamil Nadu,” she said in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The chief minister said the BCCI may be advised by the Centre to prevail upon the IPL organizers not to allow Sri Lankan players, officials, umpires and support staff to take part in the tournament in Tamil Nadu.

“We will permit IPL matches to be held in Tamil Nadu, only if organizers provide an undertaking that no Sri Lankan players, umpires, officials or support staff participate in these matches,” she said.

Justifying her stand, Jayalalithaa said, “In such a hostile and tense environment, we apprehend that the participation of Sri Lankan players in the IPL tournament, with many games to be played in Chennai, will aggravate an already surcharged atmosphere and further offend the sentiments of the people.”

Pointing out that all political parties in Tamil Nadu have repeatedly voiced their grave concern regarding these issues, she said, “The atmosphere is, therefore, already surcharged with a groundswell of popular opinion against the Sri Lankan government.”

Muralitharan disappointed with IPL ruling

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Muttiah Muralitharan has expressed disappointment at the IPL governing council’s decision to disallow Sri Lankan players from participating in matches in Chennai this season, a result of growing political tensions in Tamil Nadu stemming from the treatment of ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka.
“It’s a sad [day] for cricket as we are not allowed to play in a certain part of India. It is a government decision, if they cannot provide security for us, we have to be cautious,” former Sri Lanka spinner Muralitharan told NDTV. “I have spoken to Royal Challengers, they do not have any problems. I can play the non-Chennai games.”
Muralitharan, a Sri Lankan tamil, said he had never felt out of place. "I played for 20 years in the Lankan team, I did not have any problems as a Tamil. The government and the cricket board always supported me throughout my career even when I went through a lot of problems. Earlier there was a time of war between the Tamils and Lankans but now people are living in peace in my country. So the concerned authorities in India must come and see how we are living in Sri Lanka and forget what happened in the past. We don’t want another war-like situation now.
“If they allow us to play, we will definitely play in Chennai. Chennai is like a second home for me as my wife Madhimalar is from there. It is a sentimental situation for me. We do not want to get into politics and we just want to play our cricket and entertain our fans.”
Muttiah Muralitharan retired from international cricket in 2011 after the World Cup final in Mumbai, and has since played in various Twenty20 leagues. He has played all five seasons of IPL thus far, for Chennai Super Kings (2008-2010), Kochi Tuskers Kerala (2011) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2012)

**Ranatunga urges Sri Lanka players to boycott IPL **

Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has asked Sri Lankan cricketers to put their pride before money and boycott this season’s IPL unless they are allowed to play at all venues.
“If you are not welcome in one part of the country then why play in other venues just because of the money,” Ranatunga asked.
He was speaking to the Indian Express in response to the IPL governing council’s decisionto bar Sri Lankan players from playing in Chennai, because of growing political tensions in Tamil Nadu stemming from the treatment of ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Ranatunga, currently a Member of Parliament for Kalutara district in Sri Lanka, said he believed this decision was nothing more than politics and sport being intertwined, and that cricketers were easy prey because of the fan following and media scrutiny they deal with on a daily basis.
“It won’t be easy for players to say no to their pay cheques but at times one has to stand up and say ‘no thank you’ rather than compromise for the sake of money,” he said. “Sri Lankan cricketers are not as well-paid as some of their counterparts and playing in the IPL is a huge attraction but by giving the tournament a skip they make a statement.”
He said the decision would be a loss only for the IPL, as the tournament would be without some of the best players from Sri Lanka.

Re: It's a sad day for cricket - Murali

Indians are sore losers, and we all know that. They are cry babies, one of it's kind. No other country people are like that. They have dished out this treatment to Pakistani players now its time for Sri Lankans. All due to politics, they cannot differetiate with sports (fun) and politics.

Re: It's a sad day for cricket - Murali

Generalizing entire nation for the subject matter you have no clue about is just like calling all pakistanis terrorists.

Rest assured that none of the SL players will be shot at in India and blame be gone to america.

One should only talk about the matters they have some knowledge, and generalizations should only be made when you are open to the same kind of generalizations.

re: Cricket Diplomacy! Murali disappointed with IPL ruling

Lets see if srilankans boycott the tournament or not.

re: Cricket Diplomacy! Murali disappointed with IPL ruling

Power corrupts and power in the hands of morons (BCCI) corrupts absolutely

Re: Cricket Diplomacy! Murali disappointed with IPL ruling

No one is forcing SL players to Play IPL

They just want money and thats why they are playing

BCCI is not resposible for this SL players can back down its their choice

Re: Cricket Diplomacy! Murali disappointed with IPL ruling

On the contrary i think BCCI is totally responsible for this (or for the pak female team staying at clubhouse). They are spineless just like the congress govt in center. No one asked them to not play SL players in TN, they took that step proactively. With elections just around the corner everyone is just busy keeping people happy in their own minds.

Its high time BCCI should allow pak players play in IPL ( may be not for mumbai indians which i can understad), if ever we gonna have bilateral series in near future then first step should be IPL.
(Another reason is i want to see likes of afridi, razzaq, sami, younis etc play while they are still in form and relevent)

Re: Cricket Diplomacy! Murali disappointed with IPL ruling

BCCI is responsible but on small scale its their IPL they can do anything they want to......Like Lankans did with their SLPL no one is forcing to come to IPL and play its all about money dude.........They will complain still they will play too

Re: Cricket Diplomacy! Murali disappointed with IPL ruling

Wonder why Veera Pandiya Kattabomman is silent.

Re: Cricket Diplomacy! Murali disappointed with IPL ruling

I don't understand why it is more understandable that no Pak players be allowed to play for Mumbai Indians. The 26/11 issue has been milked enough. Shahid (big heart) Afridi, Misbah (Tuk) Haq, Kamran (the brick) Akmal had nothing to do with 26/11. If we talking numbers game, the # of Tamilians affected in Lanka is much higher.

Bottom line- keep politics out of sports. The boycott of the Moscow Olympics prevented Edwin Moses from getting three golds in 400 m hurdles. 1976 80 84. Thus going down as undoubtedly the greatest of all time. Carl Lewis could have had an earlier start to his gold medal accumulation. List goes on.

Keep politics out of Sports.

Corollary - keep Religion out of Government.

Re: Cricket Diplomacy! Murali disappointed with IPL ruling

Decades ago, our housing society screened this movie on the terrace of a building. Those days people were allowed on the terrace. Nowadays terrace is kept locked.

Sivaji Ganesan was the actor. All I remember is he talked loudly, had a wide stare and was a veer.
