LAHORE: A two-week physical training camp of the Pakistan cricket team started **at the Army School of Physical Training in Abbottabad** on Sunday. 18 players, out of 20 named for the camp, reported to camp commandant and team manager Talat Ali Malik. Star batsman Mohammad Yousaf and fast bowler Mohammad Asif, who are currently in India to represent Asian XI against Africa XI, are expected to join their teammates at the camp on June 13, a spokesman for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) told Daily Times yesterday.

The spokesman said after arrival in Abbottabad, the PCB officials and cricketers were briefed about the facilities available at the physical school along with the availability of trainers. It is pertinent to mention that the school is located at the altitude of 5000 feet above sea-level and is distinguished for its state of the art facilities and expertise for the training of athletes and gymnasts. He said the school administration had put all the facilities at the disposal of Pakistan cricket team.

**“Pakistan Army’s top physical training expert in Abbottabad **has assured the team management that players will gain a lot from the training camp. Our prime objective is to help our players get fitter and we are confident that this camp will be of great help,” the spokesman said. “Talat Ali Malik, who is team manager and camp commandant, has expressed his satisfaction over the facilities at the school.” The cricketers are accompanied by Haroon Rasheed (batting coach), Mohtasim Rasheed (fielding coach), Aaqib Javed (bowling coach) and physio Doctor Riaz.

A hectic cricket calendar is ahead for the Pakistan cricket team. They will figure in the inaugural Twenty20 Cup in South Africa in September, followed by a home series against the Proteas in September-October. After this series, they will travel to India in November-December.

Following are the players attending the camp:

Salman Butt, Imran Nazir, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Yousuf, Yasir Hameed, Misbah-ul-Haq, Naved Latif, Faisal Iqbal, Asim Kamal, Fawad Alam, Shoaib Malik (captain), Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Asif, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Umar Gul, Iftikhar Anjum and Najaf Shah

Big deal. Even the Indian team trained at an Army facility about a year ago...and we saw the kind of "commandos" they turned out to be.

Pakistan cricketers getting trained — the Army way

KARACHI: When in Rome do as the Romans do. Pakistani cricketers are abiding by this golden rule as they attend a training camp at a military base in Abbottabad.

Not particularly known for their good discipline, the players have to strictly follow the timetable for lunches and dinners at the Military Physical Training Centre’s officers’ mess where they also have to turn up formally dressed.

“There is a strict dress code at the mess and everybody including the players has to follow it,” team manager Talat Ali told ‘The News’ in an interview on Monday. “It is really good to see the cricketers turning up for their meals at the given time, immaculately dressed,” added the former Test cricketer, who is supervising the 15-day exercise aimed at helping Pakistan’s injury-prone cricketers to get in shape for a demanding international season.

The manager said that there are strict rules and regulations at the centre but added that some of them have been relaxed for the sake of the national cricketers. “But the Army officers here are very particular about the dress code. They have told us that the players have to show up smartly dressed,” he explained.

Talat said that the best part of the story is that all the players are ‘enjoying this new regimental routine’. “The cricketers are really happy with the sort of physical training they are receiving from a team of Army trainers,” said Talat. “The boys have told me that such training drills are new for them and they’ve really welcomed it,” he added.

Even Shoaib Akhtar, the ‘bad boy’ of Pakistan cricket, is having fun. “I’m really pleased at the way Shoaib is enjoying himself here. He is working hard on his fitness and I’m sure he would be in full flow soon,” said Talat.

Shoaib, 31, is set to make his international return in a one-dayer against India in Glasgow on July 1. He hasn’t played any competitive cricket since limping out of the second Test against South Africa in January with a knee problem.

The fast bowler is among the 20 players who were invited by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to attend the training camp in Abbottabad — an exercise that is the start of a campaign aimed at making the cricketers fully fit.

Talat has told the players that the camp is a great opportunity for them to improve their fitness. “Our players have to improve their fitness, there is no question about that and I’ve told them if there was ever a perfect chance for them to do it, it is now,” he said.

Talat said 18 players are currently attending fitness and nets sessions while seasoned batsman Mohammad Yousuf and medium pacer Mohammad Asif would be joining the camp on June 14. Yousuf and Asif recently turned up for Asia in the Afro-Asia Cup against Africa in the South Indian city of Chennai.

Talat said that at the end of the training camp that concludes on June 26, the cricketers would undergo fitness tests. “We have complete data on the players’ fitness taken at the last training camp in Lahore and fresh tests would help us know the sort of improvement they have achieved from this camp,” he added. Pakistan’s 14-man squad to be announced on June 16 is scheduled to leave for Glasgow by July 28.

All the hoopla … for what? khoda pahar nikla chooha, we have seen such stints in past (not from ‘military’) but short camp for this and that every now and then… whatever happened to the Johnty Rhodes camp? Re: CRICKET COMMANDOS IN THE MAKING ~ ARMY TRAINING CRICKETERS

Important points to be extracted out, from this topic. This type of military training that our team has been put through is simply not going to work. You might see slight improvement in the levels of fielding, temporary investments in the overall physical psyche of players and sugar-coated fitness level up to an acceptable standard. Do we ever think of long-term planning, something more permanent? You PCB......are you really out there to improve your books on fitness records or do you feel inclined to physically deport everyone to a boot camp in the middle of summer while the powers that be choose to lock themselves in air-conditioned rooms? Have you thought of a long-term planning? Our team needs a coach, a person, someone, who needs to be at the disposal of the team at almost all times to ensure that not only the requirements of playing a standard game of cricket are met, but greater things are achieved in the process. Import someone from US (only for Naseem Ashraf) or any other country in the world or bring in someone internally who is mentally capable of planting in seeds and producing fruits. People need motivation. How on earth can they motivate themselves after this army training is over? Who do they have to look up to? The drills, the practice and all are fine, but motivation comes from an entity. It comes from the soul of a person and not through the actions carried out by the body. These camps are as non-functional as they can be, nothing good can come out of it, at least not when one is thinking anytime permanent. Change is good, change is always good but why even bother to go that route knowing that we eventually are going to have to re-think on where to start from ground zero? Change does not translate into going back to old roots. Get up to that level of change and build something from it.

One of these past days I was reading an article published on the fielding standards of Australian team. If anyone comes across that article, do share. It highlighted on the views the rest of the world share on the standards that Australia have raised, and the internal views that there is more ground to cover and it is not what it seems from outside. The fielding, from their point of view, is up there, but could be miles better. What major difference this is. Fielding needs to be gelled into a unit. It needs to be a part of living life. Cricketers have to 'enjoy' doing what they do or it becomes a mere formality. Continuous eight-hour work shifts is hazardous to health. The dives, the timings of the dives, and all related, needs to be ingrained into one self, otherwise the notion that we all know our cricket and cannot learn anything further will only obstruct us from reaching the level comparable to Australia, and even higher.

This is the reason why we need to invest in someone (regardless of the title) who can carry this team forward in terms of psychological mindset. The only thing obstructing us is not clear vision, because we already have great visioners. We need someone who can properly implement that vision in terms of long-term planning and development of the body and soul; someone who can enrich these lives by bringing in change. Change is good, change is very good. Staple the change and multiply it many times over and we shall witness drastic results.
