Cricket and money

Is cricket being harmed by the influx of big money and endorsements, to the point where players are more concerned with cash than winning? Tendulkar, for example, has contracts totalling over US$ 25 Million.

Is this kind of thing bad for cricket?

Kareem, like any scenario seeing financial gain, what starts out as a good thing ultimately could have negative side-effects if not managed properly.

Having more money being pumped into the game is always a good thing. The majority of cricketing countries are either pretty poor to begin with and/or have boards over-eager to swallow any tasty treats offered their way. However, this will ultimately (and always does) lead to mass commercialization. Sponsors want to promote, boards want the money, players too, and soon there is way too much cricket being played; players feel the over-exposure and burnout and some potentially great talent may not be harnessed in the best possible way and may even break down. Sri Lanka are probably an example of this, as they seem more than willing to snap up any offering . Which is not a bad thing, as long as you listen to and attend to the legitimate needs of your players. Because in the end, it is them who are doing all the running around.

But player endorsements are a competely different story. The recent row over player contracts during the ICC tournament (Ind and some other teams- where there was a serious clash of interests between tournament sponsors and player's personal labels) was an ugly situation which still hasn't been cleared; rather it's just been swept under the carpet and will definitely re-surface again. If not addressed appropriately, next time around the implications in such a situation could be pretty darn harmful for the sport.
