Can anyone please tell me what was the color of the flag of the army of Holy prophet(PBUH).I have heard it was either black or white, although green is quoted as the favourite color of the Prophet(PBUH).
And when did the crescent and star become the symbol of islam?
Re: Crescent and star
Here is a link from a very old post about the star and the crescent:
Re: Crescent and star
The story posted there is nice and semi-close to the truth, but incorrect.
The crescent and star was always the emblem of the family that founded the Uthmani Khilafat, but was used since before they captured Constantinople.
When the family eventually claimed Khilafat, Muslims all over the world put the family's logo, the crescent and star, in prominent places such as flags and buildings, as a symbol of loyalty to the Khalif.
Given how the Uthmani Khalifat lasted hundreds of years, the symbol then became synonymous with Muslims (or at least Sunni Muslims).
Re: Crescent and star
I had no idea. Thank you for the correction. :)
Re: Crescent and star
Actually, your version could be right too.
It seems that no one is quite sure. I've found articles indicating the Uthmani family used the cresent and star as early as 1299, but the article says that the crescent and star was used by several different nations throughout history.
Nonetheless, the fact fact remains that the crescent and star began being used my Muslims at least around 600 years after the Prophet (pbuh) died.
Re: Crescent and star
That is what I wanted to confirm.
Any ideas what the standard or flag was like at the time of the Holy Prophet(PBUH)?
Re: Crescent and star
Early Muslim flags were completely plain. The first major flag used by Muslim was called Al-Uqaab and was just a plan black sheet. No pattern or design, just a black rectangle.
The Abbasid Khalifat also used a plain black flag.
The Ismaili Fatimid Khalifat that used to rule north africa used a plain green flag.
The Ummayad and Almohad dynasties in Spain used a plain white flag too.
Flags with designs and motifs only started being commonly used by Muslims many centuries after the Prophet (pbuh) died.
Libya is the only modern Muslim country copying this principle, and it has just a plain green flag.
Re: Crescent and star
Like JW we Muslims don't hold any icons and symbols to be sacred.
The crescent and star has nothing to do with Islam.
Re: Crescent and star
This is kind of off topic but...
Many people think that the crescent and star on Pakistan's flag represents Islam which is incorrect, the crescent represents progress and the five-rayed star represents light and knowledge.
Re: Crescent and star
hey i just noticed! the GS forum left hand side is green and the right hand side is white! cool! shouldnt it be the other way?
Re: Crescent and star
