Creating Hard drive partition without uninstalling windows first

Hi guys,
I recently bought a new laptop and this laptop only has one hard drive partition. I’m running windows 7 home premium 64 bits. I want to create 3/4 more partition without formatting my hard drive. Is there anyway I can make partition of the hard drive without uninstalling windows?

Thanks.

Re: Creating Hard drive partition without uninstalling windows first

you can try partition magic or EASUS parition manager software… they have options to create partition on the fly … i am not sure about whether they will be successful…you can try those..

Re: Creating Hard drive partition without uninstalling windows first

I have used Partition Magic and it works great. I can’t remember, though, if it can work on the active/primary partition or not!

Re: Creating Hard drive partition without uninstalling windows first

It can.

Re: Creating Hard drive partition without uninstalling windows first

You can use Windows 7’s built-in disk management tool to create new partitions on your drive. You may need to stop System restore feature, any disk monitoring tools, and de-fragment the disk first. Then run the new partition wizard from Disk Manager.

Re: Creating Hard drive partition without uninstalling windows first

^^ thanks webmister ! I did make 2 partitions using disk management tool. However, now when i try making some other partition, its not allowing me. Though, i do have more space available from which i can make 2 more partitions easily but it says " you cannot shrink a volume beyond the point where any unmovable files are located … "

I defragmented the C:/ drive after making 2 partitions, i turned off the system restore feature.. What should i do?

Re: Creating Hard drive partition without uninstalling windows first

It is getting complicated. Are the new partitions empty? you should be able to shrink space in an empty partition.

Re: Creating Hard drive partition without uninstalling windows first

Defreg again and give it a shot . Disk partition is logical , not physical , so it might need to rearrange addresses before it can make more disks out of it .

Re: Creating Hard drive partition without uninstalling windows first

Sorry to interject, but figured my question also relates to the topic at hand so I’ll ask here.

I have been wanting to try out the Windows 8 Dev. Prev., but both of my hard drives in the desktop contain data. My primary hard drive has OS and other stuff. It’s nearly full anyways. My other hard drive is a 500GB with at least 200GB that’s free. That HDD is my back up to dump data/storage.

If I was to direct Win 8 to install on the 2nd hard drive, would it create all directories needed to run an OS while leaving the existing data intact. I tried to partition, but I suck at it. I can’t seem to make it partition. Magic Partition doesn’t seem to work well on Win 7 64Bit.

PS: I don’t want to buy another hard drive. I’m most likely going to try Win 8 a few days, get bored (possibly) and come back to using Win 7. But I wanna utilize the existing free space I have on my storage drive.

Thanks fellaz!

Re: Creating Hard drive partition without uninstalling windows first

You can try virtual machine?? like..that simulation stuff??

Re: Creating Hard drive partition without uninstalling windows first

Yeah, I tried. But wasn’t very successful. It was having trouble mounting the image. I’ll retry. Thanks though, NomiCA.

Re: Creating Hard drive partition without uninstalling windows first

Get Partition Magic, its out of production now but its still working.
But yeah, as NomiCA pointed out, installing a test OS is best on a Virtual Machine (VM). You can blow it away or duplicated or move or take snapshots etc etc.
