Re: Cramps

In the last few days, I have been waking up in the middle of the night due to severe cramps in my legs... most likely because of cold. I have to keep my legs very warm during night now. I also get sharp pains in my shoulder area and below if I stand around for long periods of time or bend down while cleaning.. but that's mostly because I have scoliosis. Last back cramp was when I attended taraweeh.. I couldn't stay around for more than 8 rakats, my back totally killed me :(

do you get it in cold weather or hot?. my brother and I get in hot weather mostly. i do get all the time but if i feel warm i get more.

Re: Cramps

The cramping happens in cold weather to me. My scoliosis problem starts kicking in mostly during hot weather though.. I don't know why.
You should ask a doctor about it. Or wait till you get your blood results back.

Eat a banana everyday. I guarantee you will not get cramps anymore.

You too, Shay. An online disagreement is way too petty for me not to help someone out that might need it. It helps a great deal. A full banana everyday.

Re: Cramps

shay , what kindda therapy did u get for scoliosis ? and when did u figured out abt that ?

aiklarkie, r u sure it's muscle cramps not RLS ,restless leg syndrome

I get midnight leg cramps if I overdose on the painkiller Ponstan (Mefenamic Acid).
Try cutting down on your painkillers if you take any.

cramping leg muscle can occur at an advanced stage of stress/depression. Especially if its happening in the night. The best thing to do is keep your legs warm and muslces relaxed. YOu would notice in the day that whatever is causing you stress in life, makes you put pressure on your leg muscles and hold them in-stressed. Its habitual for a lot of people to do that. Some people would hold their foot thumbs high in pressure/stress. Look at what you might be doing. When this happens for a long period of time it gets to the point where you get cramping calf/ankle situation at night while you're sometimes even asleep. Its also terrible painful. What could also help is a fish oil supplement, its not just good for joints but also for this.

hsap i think they are cramp as i get them in my hands, feet and leg muscles. and my sis, bro and dad get as well.

but i will investigate now whether it is RLS or Cramps.

thanks your president for the tip. i will try to eat banana every day.

Re: Cramps

I get them in feet, like my toes become stiff and it feel like they have frozen. But thankfully, it only happened a couple times. Hope its not a serious problem :bummer:

Re: Cramps

The cramps I get are usually around that time of the month and are totally unbearable. I have to usually lie in bed all day after taking a Midol and a nice hot shower but oh goodness its so painful!

I heard exercises are good for those kind of cramps? Anyone else hear this?

Thanks, I try to eat one few days a week if not everyday. I need to get more serious about it I guess.

It's a weird story, I did suffer from back pains while bending down or standing up for long periods of time but never cared much. In univ, I missed one of the lectures because I overslept and had to go to the health center to get an excuse note. The nurse asked me what was wrong and of all the things, I just blurted out 'my back hurts' which actually was not true.. lol. So she examined my shoulders and back and said, I want you to go for an x-ray. I was like ummm ok.. then after everything was done and the reports came, she and the doctor told me I had scoliosis. But Alhumdulillah the spine curve is not so critically bad that I would need surgery or a brace. She told me to do physical therapy sessions to avoid back cramping and pains which I never did due to lack of time. After seeing my physician, I am now restricted from doing certain things.. such as cleaning, cooking for a long time, reading namaz standing (can't do more than 4 rakats) I still do it though but can't go overboard because then the pain is unbearable.

I don't take any painkillers. I think it's due to the weather because it gets SOOO cold.

I heard evening primrose oil helps alot. You can get the capsules at any pharmacy/walmart.

Re: Cramps

Magnesium and potassium! Lack of these can cause muscle cramps and thats why bananas work so well - they are high in both. Also take a multi-vitamin and drink lots of water or gatorade - keep up the electrolytes! Even slight dehydration can cause muscle cramps.

Re: Cramps

^^ I too read about lack of magnesium causing cramps. As for potassium a banana is definetly good source.

The leg cramps I mainly got were during pregnancy but I took care of them by supplemneting calcium in my diet. But they were really bad. My hub (being a football player) used to help me out by helping me straighten my leg and hold it more or less upright for few seconds...and although it was so painful doing that, the cramp went away almost immediately.

But of late I have been getting cramps on the sole of my feet between my toe and heel. Dont know why. Also the other day I got a cramp on my calf, but I was alone and could not straighten my leg by myself and it was soooo painful. Through tears I manage to straighten my leg.

I think I will try out the banana a day

Re: Cramps

shay , if u've consulted just one doctor for that, i suggest get a second opinion
