wanna stay away from REALLY expensive processing chips… 400 to 500 (CDN) a piece for chip is what i am looking at..
person i have to build the system for, doesnt wanna spend more than 2G on processing chips.

not really a server,but something like a server. Btw what is the price range. Are you willing to pay like 5-7K USD. Coz the specs you wrote can only fit in somethign in that range. May be some one can come up with some un-branded stuff which would definitely be cheaper than IBM.
I am big IBM fan ( not because I work for IBM), but coz of their support and range of products. For graphic designing ( rendering blah blah), my place use IBM intelli workstations. They are the best by far any means ( at least in Saudi Arabia).

Instead of super micro I would say go for Asus K8N-DL Motherboard, E-ATX, Dual AMD Opteron Supported, DDR400 ECC Registered, PCI-E, SATA, GB LAN & 8ch Audio, will cost you around $400 CAD
BUT I still recommend get a proper quad-cpu server....

if its chappar-talay, special arrangements would be needed to execute..
i THINK if quad options dont show up, will be going with opteron (2x) dualcores ,with k8n-dl
so no need for a 32 !

just checked opteron’s prices (socket940) (cuz k8n isnt 939) …
