Re: CPA exam

^LOL

Is apprentice ship the same as articleship/internship ?

No, this is an actual job I am talking about. Most under grads start as a Staff (Audit/Tax etc.) and get promoted to Senior. Before they can get their next promotion (Manager), they need to have their CPA credentials.

Re: CPA exam

^ yeh that's right. I know a few seniors that can't be promoted at the big 4 and become managers because they haven't taken the exams. It's pretty sad. That's y I really wanna get it out of the way, and ofciurse you get a higher bonus if you pass them in ur first yr atleast at the big 4. :)

If anyone here is coming straight out of college with a finance, accounting degree looking for an audit job I would recommend trying to get into the big 4 and working atleast for a yr there even if u wanna move somewhere else later. They make it very easy for u to get a CPA.

Re: CPA exam

You lot in the US have it made then. We had to go through a rough 2 years of full time education - the CA Foundation part - before we could join as juniors in an audit firm. And then the usual 9AM to 12AM-2AM routine. It really is very hard to squeeze in your studies when you have such a crappy routine. And I am sure they are much more organized in terms of busy season because ours was spread throughout the year. The annual closings split between June 30th and December 31st (for different clients), then the half yearly and quarterly reviews. Plus other assignments. It was one hell of a busy routine throughout the year. If anyone would lag behind, they would chew him up and spit him out. lol. Now when I look back, it was all for good, really toughens you up. I did 3 years in Financial Advisory then - absolutely loved it.

Well, all the best for your CPA and job sumo :)

Re: CPA exam

^thanks.

It also depends here on which client u have and what their yr end is. However since many corporations have a calendar yr end we usually call that time period the busy season. But it sounds pretty tough where u r.

Re: CPA exam

wooohooooooooo just wanted to give an update. i found out that i passed the first exam i toook!!!!!!!!!!! yayayayyyyyyyyy im scheduling the second one for first week in april.

Good job! I was going to pm you to ask if you got your score but I didn't want to be a pest. Are you tackling FAR section next?

Re: CPA exam

Thanks! Yeh, FAR is next. I'm thinking of taking it in the first week of April since I'm going on vacation in mid April. But it's pretty long, it's all the stuff u study in ur two intermediate acc courses plus some more. It's almost twice as much material as BEC and almost twice as long as the BEC exam. But the material is pretty easy.

Re: CPA exam

hey sumorani im gona strt prepin for my cpa exams too im so confused bout the material out there thoguh. vei a hard time in pickin one.. im so happy someone here on gs is taking this exam to. care to guide me in any teni tiny way:D...... n congratualtions on passing.... wow u did gr8 M.A!!

Re: CPA exam

Sumorani:

bu 2 cents of advice:

If ur like me Proffesional Accountancy is a boring and time requiring subject.

If ur finding it difficult, why dont you try joining some tuition classes for the course and revision/exam prep classes, also it would give you interaction with others to get rid of the boredom.

There a lots of such centres in the U.K, and they are very good they gurantee you to pass first-time, or they refund your fee's.

And they really do They make the whole course a heck of a lot easier than going it alone.

Im speaking from some experience.

(Im also doing something now, and i feel the same way get bored when working next to a cpu and just lured into gup-shup. lol.)

Maybe there are such facilities in your area you could avail.
maybe u already are, in that case ill be off.

goodluck for your course.

Re: CPA exam

misty, thanks, i still have 3 more to go!

im taking becker classes but i dont actually go to the classes anymore, i feel like they are a waste of time. they give u books (and flashcards if u order them- u have to purchase them seperately). if u want u can order all the material online, and they will send u the books and cd lectures, this way u dont have to attend any class, and u can watch the lectures at home, they are 4 hours each. the classes are also 4 hours each. when u go to class, they give u a cd for each lecture.

bec i think is the easiest and shortest exam but as long as u go thru all the books and do all the homework for each section, u should have absolutely no problem passing the exams.

Re: CPA exam

thanks amir and yes i am taking cpa courses but they are an absolute waste of time for me. they are amazingly boring. i havent been to the last 6 classes, instead i read the books on my own, do the hw myself. i have friends taking the exams also, i actually made a study group with a friend of mine, and when we met all we did was chat so now i jsut study on my own and its the best for me. i actually study more now so im not having a problem. :) good luck with ur own exams!

Re: CPA exam

hey sumorani/.. thanks for da info.. the thing is i was all swt on becker and stuff.... but then i came across some peeps who dint benefit wid becker but did a lot wid yeager and stuff...... so now im split between the two..... how s becker holdin up for u???? is it detialed and in accorance wid da actual exam and hw many days r u puttin in for each exam??? as in is da becker dt good dt u cn do it in fewer days n all MCQZ r good n like da exam itself????? someone told me yeager has mre mcqs and stuff... n wts ur exact take on live clases and home clases im kinda leanin on the self study amterial n lecture cds and hws n stuff... wt do u think?????

im hel bent on getin thru all of the 4 exams rite after i get married..... so any adice???

Re: CPA exam

misty, becker is really good! There is no way you can fail the exams if you read the books and do the mcqs. I have never heard of Yeager, have no idea what that is. I dont like live classes, in my last semester of college i had pretty much stopped going to classes. I study better on my own so I havent been to the last 6 cpa classes either. Becker gives you lecture CDs so if you want you can listen to the 4 hour lectures at home on ur computer also (which i also dont do). I just took and passed the BEC exam, i didnt go to majority of the BEC classes and never looked at the lectures on the CD. I got my NTS in the last week of Feb, and I had been lazying around the whole month cuz I thought i woudltn get the NTS till March (and sicne March is an off-month I wouldnt have been able tot ake the exam till April) but when I got it, I figured that I NEED to take it otherwise id be taking 2-3 exams in april. So i really crammed for that last week and slept only 3 hours the night before the exam. I was extremely tired when i went to take the exam so i woudlnt recommend that to anyone. Dont cram!! Thank God i still passed.

The flashcards are an extra $95-100. If you really dont care about the money then go for it, they can help you specially right near ur exam time, they will help you refresh your memory. But its pretty much the same material in the books they give you so theres no point in really buying them.

I got married a few months ago and finished my last semester of college after getting married and have just started takign the exams so it definitely can be done! Its very easy for me though cuz i dont have to worry about college anymore since im done with it, i dont work, and i live alone with my husband, so i can concentrate just on the cpa exam (if i fail any part of the exam then shame on me!) the only problem is that i stay on the computer or watch a lot of tv.

if you're gonna be living with inlaws and have responsibilities then u will need to set up some time for urself to study for it. the exams are not difficult, but dont expect to pass them without studying. if you find that you are unable to study at home cuz someone is always calling u for something then u need to go to the library or starbucks. good luck!

Re: CPA exam

thanks for replyin sumorani..... i dun think ill ve loads or responsibilites on me.... jus livin wid ppl n kids specificaly doesn allow u to get much studyin done .... so yeah il prolly b stuck in a library all the time i think starbukcs wud distract me.... so thanks for ur advice.... u reinstoredmy faith in becker....

Re: CPA exam

^yeh becker is very good. and studyign at the library is definitely better than starbucks. you would end up spending too much money on coffee. haha :) i learned the hard way.

Re: CPA exam

congrautlations!
