Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

All the more reason for the Army to return to their baracks and Musharaf and his pseudo Democracy to fall… For all their BS about respecting the Army as an institution, it rings hallow when the Army is no longer willing to defend its people.

Tank: A town tormented by fear
By Syed Shoaib Hasan
BBC News, Tank

Few in Tank dare openly criticise the Taleban
A bold sign painted on a wall establishes the heritage of the north-western Pakistani town of Tank.

“Welcome to Tank: Gateway to South Waziristan and home to Frontier Constabulary.”

The Frontier Constabulary (FC) was started by the British Raj in this part of undivided India.

The FC’s job was to keep marauding tribesmen from Waziristan and other adjoining tribal areas at bay.

Recently, that past has reappeared to haunt this border town of just under a quarter of a million people.

Sense of uneasiness

A new group of tribesmen, pro-Taleban militants, now descend on the town on a regular basis.

To start with, their visits were non-violent - but as many testify - they are now full of silent menace.

That has been apparent since 26 March when security forces tried to stop forays by the militants.

We can deal with… any untoward incident

Tank Deputy Chief of Police Mohammad Idrees Khan

That led to several violent clashes in which dozens have been killed.

Following those clashes, the Taleban are increasingly open in their activities.

The security forces appear to have backed down and keep a low profile. They seem unable to stop the militants.

Locals say the military is unwilling to take action because of fears over further casualties and President Musharraf’s reluctance to upset the militants.

There is palpable sense of uneasiness as we enter Tank. Police and FC personnel appear wide-eyed and uncertain.

The town seems to be bustling with activity, but the mood is anything but jovial.

Three days earlier, the Taleban stormed the home of the head of the local civilian administration, killing 13 of his family members.

The attack was carried out in spite of government assurances that the situation was under control.

Our first meeting illustrates an obvious home truth about the people of Tank - everybody knows what is happening and is afraid to talk about it.

‘Collaboration’

“Even the walls have ears over here,” says a school teacher from behind the safety of his front door.

Inside, he explains how the principal of a local school was kidnapped by the Taleban for allegedly providing information to the authorities.

Many locals say they are not properly protected

“They let him go after being convinced he was not involved,” he says.

“But there are quite a few others who have been beheaded for alleged collaboration.”

Like many others, he is adamant that the government intentionally does not want to tackle the militants.

“It is the government’s responsibility to protect us,” says an angry local restaurant owner.

“They always disappear when we need them most.”

But not all the locals are so resolutely against the Taleban.

“We are with them… all they are doing is for the sake of Islam,” says one man.

But it has to be said that such views are not held by the majority of the population.

“We have always been Muslims… we don’t need anyone to tell us how to practise our faith,” said an irate resident.

Yet despite the anger, he and the general populace appear helpless to stop the militants’ assault.

“The government knows what is happening… why don’t they stop it?” asks one man.

Deathly afraid

Tank’s residents are not the only ones affected by the upsurge in Taleban activity.

A Sufi shrine which hosts an annual fair and devotional prayers has also been hard-hit.

The Sufi shrine is no longer a centre of activity

“Pir Shabbir Shah’s urs [devotional prayers] used to attract thousands of people,” says the shrine keeper.

“We would have a fair with music, and wrestling and other sports.”

But that has all changed.

When we visited the shrine, close to the city centre, only a few dozen people were present.

“They are all afraid because the Taleban don’t like to see people enjoying themselves,” a devotee said, before being told to keep quiet by his friends.

This is the core of the problem and shows the level of intimidation that people face. Although most complain about the government, nearly all are deathly afraid of saying a bad word about the militants.

“It’s representative of what’s happening all over the tribal areas,” says Mohammad Idrees Khan, deputy chief of police in Tank.

Mr Khan says that things have improved since the March incident and that the police are now better armed and equipped.

“We also have the support of the FC and can deal with any untoward incident,” he said.

But his nervous demeanour as he escorts us to our vehicle betrays itself when we ask him how long it has been since he last had a holiday.

“A while… things are not so good, as you know,” he brusquely replied.

A local political leader lends perspective on what is happening.

“The government knows what is going on… they are part of the problem themselves,” he said.

He asked how militants can move around without the security forces knowing anything about it.

“If the government fails to enforce its writ, the inevitable outcome is that the state will begin to fall apart,” he said.

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

drop some bombs you, get the turbinator weirdos on teh run, this is BS.
I am extremely extremely disappointed at the lack of will this govt has shown dealing with militants like these and the lal masjid freaks.
pathetic display.

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

Maybe you'd like to patrol the city of Tank. But before you go in, I suggest you take American Bhutto and the Saudi Nawaz with you as well (They have alot of plundered money which could buy a decent gun or two to carry out your humane mission).

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

Its not MY responsibility to patrol Tank because im not the ARMY... The responsibility is that of the ARMIES... Thats what an ARMY does, iT DEFENDS it peole and its borders... The Pakistan Army does neither.
The Pakistani Armies only purpose is to run their bussiness, and steal or snatch land and generally deprive the people of their basic right.
The Army has failed my friend. Its a corrupt institution.
Whats Humane about ALLOWING 13 people to be MURDERED in TANK without the govt even lifting a finger? This is cowardice... The Army has failed to defend its people.

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

Why are Pakistanis spending so much on defense when the Armies only role is to sit on their posh Defense Housing colony butts and play golf?!?!
Its infuriating!

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

i dunno man...this is just too disappointing.

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban…

I have lost faith in the armies ability to police the nation and act as a political agent. I trust in a war with another nation, they may do an ok job, not allowing territory to be taken, a stalemate if you will given odds…but internally, it has become a shambles. The cancer of Islamists run wild in Pakistan, the govt doesnt raise a finger.

Pakistan will fall to Islamists, and the govt of Musharraf will have sat back and watched it happen, this fausian alliance between the military and the mullahs will ruin Pakistan beyond repair.

Brace yourselves, before long little girls hopping to school, apple and notebook in hand, will be picked up and killed for breaking draconian laws. Religion is a monster when allowed to get out of hand.

Someone stand up to the mullahs, all over Pakistan, or say goodbye to the Pakistan experiment.

Well said :k:

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

Oh God---I am glad you said this

very well said

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

Thats a sad and sorry story. I am amazed to see absence of Pakhtoons independent spirit. Where was his Pakhtoon spirit when someone entered his house without permission? Why his other Pakhtoon brothers did not protect him and his family?

These Pakhtoons never needed the protection of the army to protect themselves, rather they were the defender of the borders.

There are thousands of Wazirs in the army. They hold very high esteem in their villages. Why can't the government deploy those army officers there to create better understanding between common person and the army. These fanatics can only be defeated with proper education and with the help of the common man.

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

The people of Tank are screaming in silence.. These Taliban people have them by the throat!
I can go on and on about the hypocracy of this govt and the military... Everyday it becomes more and more clear that Musharaf and the military have only one goal.
To preprtuate their rule over the country at all cost, just to continue to leech of the nation..
This is the defintiion of a parasitic Bacteria, an organism which has no value for the host, but has a vested intest in keeping the host alive just to perpetuate itself.
Even if the country is on life support, the Army is satisfied so long as it contiues to sifen of the nations hard earned money and resources.
Nawaz Sharif and Bhutto may have been corrupt to the core, but the Army is such an institution, that their corruption is institutional, so whatever corruption exists, can be justified through the very laws that they have doctored to suit their whims whenever they are in govt. When the politicians tried the same thing, they were kicked out. The Army on the other hand is free to horde all resources and power into its own hands. It will be nearly impossible to rid the country of Military corruption without some kind of revolution. I hope the nation wakes up to the injustice soon... None of the civilian and secular forces have the man power or will to take on the Army/govt, but its obvious that when faced with an equaly ruthless opponent, such as the Taliban, the generals are cowards... They have no problem attacking human rights groups with lati charges, but the sh1t themselves at the site of the stick wielding madrassa students.
Disgusting, poor PAKISTAN...

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

It will be a disaster for Pakistan if these uneducated, uncivilized and barbaric Mullahs from the NorthWest manage to grab more power. Their vision of an Islamic System doesn't go beyond barbaric punishments for what they consider to be crimes. They have no understanding or knowledge of how to run a government, manage local and national economy and conduct foreign affairs. They don't understand the difference between "sins" and "crimes," and offer no human rights protection that rest of the civilized world has long acknowledged to be necessary such as "due process." They endorse mob justice, and their tactics create the perfect circumstances for sectarian violence and civil war.

I can understand that a lot of people in Pakistan are religiously conservative and although I don't agree with a lot of their views and opinions, I respect their right to market their ideas and support political groups that represent their wishes. What I don't understand (or rather get frustrated with) is how they refuse to perform some house cleanup and don't mind being controlled by who arguably come from the least fortunate, least civilized, least educated segments of our society: the Madrassah Generation!

What I was hoping to see this year in Pakistan was a peaceful, political and democratic "transition of powers." A stable democracy is less about having elections (fair or not) and more about "transition of powers." Unfortunately Musharraf has badly bungled that. Combined with the rise of Mullah power, I believe we are beginning to see the collapse of Jinnah's experiment.

I have no doubt in my mind that when or if a 'Mullah' government "fully" takes over in Pakistan, their draconian tactics will push us into sectarian violence followed by a full fledged civil war.

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

Pakistan will be destroyed, ripped apart if these people every took power. Its to horifc to imagine.
Investment would dry up, it would be another Afghanistan, only far worse.
Musharaf doesnt seem to have any problem with this though...

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

Islamism is a cancer, whereever it goes.

We need a final solution to the mullah problem. These parasites are going to wreck Pak, and the establishment is not acting.

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

A bit of the mark there mate...it ought to be, "Islam is a cancer"...

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

Islam is a religion that tells you how to live your own life. Islamism is a movement that wants to control my life and make everybody miserable. I've got no problem with the former, I won't stand the latter.

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

Anti Islamism is a biggest cancer who are trying to potray islam as cancer
these are biggest extremist
inshallah we will soon see the downfall of these mush lover (qadiani who hate islam )

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

If there will be Islam ,there will be free media , free adlia, freedom of expression
no mush and mush lovers as these mush lovers have currupted the islamism by injecting "MULANA FAZAL UR REHMAN" in to that , who had totaly corrupted the movement
and today what your thoughts are , are 100% correct

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

An haan, and the proof of that is where, in the defaced Dalda Ghee advertising boards in Peshawar? Or in the girls school being shutdown in the tribal areas?

Re: Cowardly Pak Arm/govt at the mercy of Taliban...

Islam is fine, practised moderately. It is a system of ethics. But Islamism is a disease, with sucks the life force from a populace.

Mehreleone,

In no way is Mushy associated with the Qadiani heritics, nor is the PM. Criticize them all you wish, but dont stoop to such lowly slander.
