Covering White Hair

Sadly, I have a ton due to permanent sinus and genes from my dad. The worst part is they’re right on the center on my head so they’re quite visible. I dyed my hair a medium brown a couple of months ago hoping that it’d color my white hair but it didn’t. It’s grown out now and I have about 2 inches of my natural dark brown/black hair showing so I was thinking of dying it again. I have two questions.

  1. If I use hair dye over my whole head, will the hair that’s already brown get lighter than the black hair? should I keep it on the black hair for a little longer?

  2. What brand/specific hair dye would cover the white?

Re: Covering White Hair

You should be using specific dyes for gray coverage. When you go to your drugstore...make sure the product is specifically formulated for gray hair. That will help.

Also...gray hair tends to resist color...try to start on the gray area before the rest of your hair. So if the color takes about 35 minutes to develop - which is typical - you should probably do your gray roots for 20 minutes before applying the dye to rest of your hair.

Make sure your hair care products are ALL for color treated hair. That means sulfate and paraben free shampoos, conditioners and products.

Don't wash your hair as frequently.

Re: Covering White Hair

Oh dear, same here. Premature greying. It wasn’t so bad in the beginning when they weren’t in the front and my parting covered them. But now I have quite a few along the hairline.

I tried a lot of things in the beginning and now I have a routine that works. Firstly, chose a colour as close to your natural colour as possible, the greys will always dye slightly lighter but they blend in nice.

Second, don’t use permanent dye. Use a semi permanent and go all over. I do mine about every 6-7 weeks now. I never lose the colour off the length in this time but the white roots become long enough that I need to dye again.

My dye of choice is L’oreal Casting Creme Gloss. It works really well. I have stubborn greys and this is the only one that dyes them ALL and well but you do need to apply a LOT and make sure the grey areas are covered in copious amounts of dye… I’m not so fussy about the rest and just comb some dye through. I do leave it in for a long time… 45mins -1hr.
I start from the side of my head, comb my hair upwards to make a parting… apply dye, another parting a bit higher, apply more and go all the way from one side of my head to the other. At the end I comb it all backwards and apply lots more along the hairline.

When I wash it out, I don’t use shampoo. The chemicals in the hairdye clean the hair just as well. Wash gently the first few washesa after this too… you will still have dye washing out but if you wash too aggressively, the dye will fade off the whites quicker.

Another thing I like about Casting Creme Gloss is that is leaves your hair really smooth and shiny.

And I found this to be pretty good: Amazon.com
I don’t use it after washing as it’s weird and greasy. But before I wash my hair (maybe 15 mins before) I spray and comb through. It seems to protect the colour a bit, so you don’t get so much of the effect of the colour fading.. just growing out.

Basically, no one can tell I dye my hair.

Re: Covering White Hair

hey stoppit,

What colour hair do you have i hav had SO many issues trying to find the right colour... Im kinda dark brown not black at all... I can't for the life of me find the right colour...Its either too dark or too light :(

Is L'oreal Casting Creme Gloss permanent or semi-permanent?

Re: Covering White Hair

hey crown, it's semi permanent.

i have dark brown hair...it's dark brown and can look black at times but when the sun is on it you can clearly see it dark brown. use 400 Dark Brown as it is the most natural dark brown. there is another brown that is darker than this one.

there is another one i like, it's similar but slightly darker and warmer. i think it's dark chocolate 323.

i don't actually use the whole lot either...well the first time you might have to. but then you save the tube and nozzle. then next time, i put half the cream in the old tube and add half the colour tube to that. i use scales so it's exact halves. since i'm mostly just concentrating on my roots and then combing some dye through the rest, this is more than enough for my hair.

Re: Covering White Hair

hey thanx,

Im going boots later on so i will keep a look out for it.... I dnt have many whites so half goes in the bin this time ill do what you do ;-)

Re: Covering White Hair

Thanks Reha, my hair tends to get oily very quickly so I wash it almost every day but i'll try not to. Also, there's something i'm still a little confused about. I have black hair, with whites.....my goal is to have medium brown hair. How do I manage to turn the the whites, brown and the black, medium brown? Can I achieve both with one box of color if I get the one that colors whites? Will it turn the black hair lighter also?

Re: Covering White Hair

Same here, I feel like more whites are sprouting out everyday. I don’t mind my natural hair color but I like my hair brown also…this is something I just asked Reha too, can I find hair dye that’ll color my whites yet make my black hair lighter too? also, my hair is already brown from the bottom so if I use another brown dye over my whole head, would that make the hair thats already brown, lighter? should I leave it on the black hair for longer?

I’ve heard many people suggest semi permanent over permanent, why is that? Thanks for all the tips, i’ll check out the L’oreal Casting Creme Gloss.

Re: Covering White Hair

Man, like no joke everyone that I know of with premature grey hair, those hair dye's formulated specifically for grey hair did nothing for them permanently or longer than a month. And don't dye over the already dyed hair, I've done that and my hair got lighter and it sucked! My roots were the color I dyed and the rest of the hair were yet lighter, and it looks horrible especially when you tie your hair up.

Re: Covering White Hair

^Oh no :( that's what I was afraid of...maybe I should just get it done professionally...or just be safe and dye the whole thing jet black. I do love how jet black hair looks, especially on desi skin, but I wear a lot of black and always wear eyeliner so the last time I dyed my hair jet black, my friends and family used to tease me calling me a "goth" lol

Re: Covering White Hair

i read that drinking coconut milk on regular basis help with pre-mature greying and reverse them but havn't really tried myself. diet is a big factor. u need to balance ur Ph(eat acidic n alkaline food in equal ratio so the Ph should b around 7.5) coz if ur Ph is more acidic u'll hav premature greying. ppl who started going raw more reports reversing of grey hair.

Re: Covering White Hair

so how often do you folks color up your greys?
