your conver letter is you talking to the employer without physically being there. this is an interface which will enable your prospective employer to note your qualities and whether you are on merit and fit for the job desc you indicated that you are applying to, in order for the employer to call you in for an interview opportunity.
so, as you can see, it is necessary to have a short, to the point and polite cover letter that delineates your work experience and qualities.

you have to write it like any official letter.
be precise and indicate why you are applying to a particular advert from that employer.
what brings you to that org,
how much related work experience you have,
what kind of career aspirations you have if you were to get hired at that position,
& finally indicate a request to be given an opportunity to interview for the position,
indicate that you look forward to hear from the employer soon.

and then you send this letter with your vitae, an then follow up within a week's time. or wait for a call.
cover letter is a very good tool to express your intent to interview at a given org, since you obviously have something that makes you qualified for a given job desc by that org, and so there you are, applying to it.

Re: Cover Letters

Thanks dushi :) When i draft my final one tomorrow would i be able to pm you it to proof read, i feel like you know what your talking about and i would feel alot more confident if i had somone proof read the cover letter as you mentioned its very important for it to be to the point. :)

Re: Cover Letters

Also include information other than what you have already stated in your resume. And, include the source from which you came to know about the position. Typically there can be two cases :

  1. When you know the person to whom you want to send your cover letter to.
  2. When you dont have the above info.

The formats for the above are easliy available online.

goodluck.

Re: Cover Letters

sure, you're welcome. :>
& as pegasus online said, do please add the info where you read the advert from.
on line or in print.
