Cover Letter/ Resume

I am helping my kid sister with her cover letter and resume so she can apply for college internships. Please give some good ideas/tips for cover letters and resumes, even samples if you have any.

Thank you =)

Re: Cover Letter/ Resume

hey i'm working on mine these days as well! one of the best resources i can recommend to you is to have your sister meet with her uni's employment advisor. they can help her polish up her resume, and even send it out to prospective employers if she'd like. they're a great help in making suggestions of key things that employers want to read on the resume.

Don’t have my resume/cover letter saved on the computer, but here are some tips.

Your cover letter is like a brief summary that tells the employer about who you are, where you were educated, what your degree is in, credentials/accomplishments, why you think you’d be an asset to the company/field, and what you can bring to the field. You can mention that you like to update yourself regarding the latest research/developments/technology in your field and enjoy putting it to use (example).

For example, as a teacher, my cover letter discusses my degree, experience (subjects I have taught), my philosophy for teaching, the wonderful things I do in my classroom, my accomplishments (best test scores, awards, recognitions, etc), and why I feel I’d be an asset to the school.

The cover letter should be no more than a page and you are basically summarizing what is in your resume. You’re selling yourself to the employer because that is the first thing he’s going to read…so it shouldn’t be overly long and detailed…it’s a strong summary that should interest the employer into taking a look at your resume.

Resume…

These are trickier because everyone has their own style. First, you’re going to list the basics such as contact information (name, address, phone #). Then move on to your objective (goal). Then break down your educational credentials. Then your work experience (dates, places you worked)…break down the work experience heading into bullets that briefly describes the strong and wonderful tasks that you did at your previous job. Include accomplishments/awards/recognition. Include skills. And if you have space, include hobbies/personal interests. And lastly, put your references (contact info for previous employers and other people who will give a good reference).

Tips:
PROOFREAD FOR SPELLING AND GRAMMATICAL ERRORS

Save your resume and cover letter on the computer. You never know when you might need to send your resume in the future. So by saving it you can get back to the original format and just update the information…rather than starting all over again.

I hope this helps. I feel your pain. I HATE the resume writing/fixing/updating…interviewing…and just the overall job search process.
