Are cover letter and CV same thing or are they different.
CV is your Curriculum Vitae (resume);
Cover letter is just your cover letter.
Now I know what CV stands for ![]()
I still don’t know what it means … ![]()
Your CV is actually a great deal more detailed than your regular resume. It should list all of your education in reverse chronological order, same for awrds, honors, publications or organizations you belong to, all jobs held, and there are sites on the web to help you get started.
Your cover letter simply states for what job you are applying, a brief introduction of yourself, and there are also guides on the web for this, since it is diffrent for different areas of the job market. Good luck
thanks anahndi
So if I undertand this correctly, if a employer ask for a CV, he is asking for a more detailed version of my resume. If my resume was typically 3 pages, I guess my CV will be 6 pages.
I always thought that resume and CV were synonyms.
thanks
Boston,
very often, a reasume' and a CV are used synonymously... I usually confirm with the employer what it is they actually want, otherwise, I send them both and they can take their pick. My resume' is 2 pages (hard to keep it at that length) and the CV is 6 pages... but I find that I need to be selective even on the CV to keep it short.
Thanks Umar
you learn something new everyday ... cool
Here is a decent site explaining the differences between your vitae and your resume. And I agree that you should consult w/employer before final submission.

my moms CV was only 2 pages, it was tough to squeeze everything on but she got it made and they told her it was best to keep it short and sweet
I was told a CV should NEVER exceed 2-3 pages. This was by a professor of mine, so we're talking even for educated folk.
anahndi; thanks for the link, it was a good read
angelo_dundee And larki_punjaban; Could it be possible that you are using Resume and CV as synonyms??
My Resume is 3 pages and that’s after dropping few jobs that I had in early days. I have also managed to squueze it into 2 pages, but I had to drop another job, use wider margins and smaller font. Since my experince is only US based non-academic work, I can tell you this much about US hiring managers, what matters the most is the first half of the first page that a reader can cover within two second. If you can catch their attention and interest then they will read the remaining pages.
I’m in process of wirting my CV and have writtern over 11 pages
When I do have to have to send this CV, I plan to trim it down to 6 pages. Only keeping the stuff that applies directy to the job, everything else will be gone. By the way, I do the same thing with my resume, but not that drastic. Right now I have over 29 versions of resume floating on my system ![]()
This is based on the US and may be different elsewhere
From every recruiter or hiring manager I have spoken to they have always said the resume should be one page long at the most two but only if you really really need that much space cause of your experience.
In general the resume does not need to have every single job you have had only the relevant ones and you can always mention that a more detailed resume is available.
A CV on the other hand is a detailed review of all your career life and its generally a couple of pages long. However anything over 5 pages is really only useful for academic jobs.
