Cousin Marriages- a discussion

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

Anyway… back to the topic.

Here is some old news articles I found on the BBC from some years ago! It was a huge problem then too.

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

Lol! If you want people to believe the
doctor story you are really gonna have
to start picking more believable bull****
to post here.

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

Just watched a little of the prog now, very disturbing. The family from bradford have 4 kids who have a disability of some kind, the mother is some way is stupid for knowing what had happened to her 2nd child, to then go on gone and have 2 more children to which she passed this disease onto aswell.

I've never understood this cousin marriage concept, how can one possibly see the other person in that light knowing in some way shape or form, you share the same bloodline yet are willing to go down that route. shudders

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

what if there are papers and papers on medical research from all around the world, what if some islamic leaders are saying think about it?

You are absolutely entitled to your opinion...but what makes you say its all made up bs?

also the 1/4 thing is not rubbish at all in anyway, it makes mathamatical sense.

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

It was a good documentary, hopefully as time goes on ppl will become more aware of the potential problems of repeated cousin marriages. Was really sad seeing those poor kids suffering, hope their parents don’t go and marry them off to their cousins as well :smack:The mirpuri point is very true, same goes for sylheti bangladeshis whilst other groups within those nationalities are far more open to marrying ‘outsiders.’ In our family we don’t have any cousin marriages at all, not parents, grandparents, nothing.. The genetic screening is a good idea, would like to see that offered to any families considering cousin marriages.. would be even better to make it mandatory but imo that will never happen..

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

yeah i think more and more couples esp those going for cousin marriages should be be offered genetic screening.

I like the way the documentary showed all kinds of views and wasnt a bashing against pakistanis.

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

You think all the medical research and statistics are made up??

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

The man from the mosque seemed to have the same attitude of digging his head in the sand.. that was quite disappointing but I guess an accurate reflection of how a lot of the more cultural Muslims think..

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

a clip from the show.

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

You related to William Shatner?

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

it's good people are becoming aware, but the issue is repeated cousin marriage, not just cousin marriage.

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

i think repeated cousin marriges passes down more genes which cause an issue but i think there is still increased risk of a higher chance of genetic disease with a first cousin marriage whether their parents are cousins or not.

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

yeah he didnt even want to listen! but i think it was good they showed another muslim leader who even though was married to his cousin himself told people to look at medical research and think about it.

and that poor family at the start why did the mother have more children i felt so sorry for those kids!

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

what a goof ball was the imam from the midlands, prolly a fob from back home who could'nt and would'nt answer the hosts question. idiot.

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

philly, but people are not aware, many of the people question in the documantery were saying its something they just dont talk about in the community, i cant fathom the reason why, either theyre ignorant to the problem facing those who are suffering or just aren't bothered as its not effecting them and theyre healthy.

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

its something thats been going on for long its imbedded in our culture, even though its not necessarily the most healthy thing to do i dont think people feel they need to change.

Like for example, the first family who had 3 children who were blind dead and unable to speak..they said themselves its not because we are cousins....its because they were constantly ill as children...its frustrating to see.

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

Where can I see the full video online?

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

Spiral...it was shown in the UK so its available on the channel 4 website in the uk and on youtube for uk peeps.

Ill try and find as many clips as possible!

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

a shame to hear from what the women in midlands tried to do 13 yrs ago got such a negative response from people of the community and from religious folks of their respected areas.

Re: Cousin Marriages- a discussion

i think people should realise that no one is trying to attack our culture or beleifs but trying to help us and encouraging us to make informed decisions about whats good for us and our children.

I cant believe there isnt a national health campaign about it, but maybe will respond to it with hostility just like how they ripped up those womens leaflets.
