PESHAWAR: A local court on Monday summoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in the damages suit of Rs1 billion filed by former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa minister and Qaumi Watan Party’s (QWP) provincial general secretary Bakht Baidar Khan.

District and Sessions Judge (DSJ) Peshawar Shaiber Khan issued notice to Imran Khan and directed him to appear before the court on January 7, 2014 to explain his position in the case.During the hearing, counsel for Bakht Baidar, who was fired by the PTI-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government along with his Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) colleague, former minister for forests Ibrar Hussain, submitted that the plaintiff had issued legal notice to the PTI chief on November 18, 2013, asking him to explain his removal from the cabinet on the charges of corruption and provide evidence or tender an apology and pay Rs1 billion as damages for defaming his person and his party.

The counsel submitted that Imran Khan had failed to reply to the legal notice after 15 days, the period for submission of reply, and now the former minister wanted to start legal proceedings against him.

Bakht Baidar stated in the damages suit that he was elected Member Provincial Assembly on PK-97 Lower Dir on his party’s ticket and he was made a minister and given portfolio of labour as the QWP was a coalition partner in the provincial government. He claimed his work and performance was praised not only by the public, but also by the members of the provincial assembly.

On November 11, he added that he was shocked to know that allegations of corruption had been levelled against him by the defendant (Imran Khan) in an irresponsible and unethical manner and this appeared in the electronic media and various national newspapers.

The counsel said the imputation/accusations made by the defendant were utterly false, clearly mischievous and made purposefully and deliberately to defame the plaintiff, damage his reputation and expose him to hatred and public ridicule.

He said the fictitious allegations levelled against the former minister by the respondent were never communicated to him by the PTI chief nor the KP chief minister and speaker of the assembly. The plaintiff requested the court to pass a decree amounting to Rs1 billion against the defendant to effect recovery of the damages due from him.
