**RAWALPINDI: The assets of Ali Musa Gilani, son of former Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, Fauzia Gilani and other accused, including Makhdoom Shahabuddin and Khushnood Lashari, were ordered to be frozen in the ephedrine quota case on Tuesday.

Arshad Tabassum, the Rawalpindi judge of the Special Narcotics Court (SNC), also issued summons to the accused allegedly involved in the case to be present on February 12, 2013 to give details of their sources of income and explain as to how they accumulated so much wealth.
According to the fourth challan in the ephedrine quota case of the Anti-Narcotics Force, there were 17 accused persons, including two approvers, Dr Rashid Juma, former Director General Health, and Rizwan Ahmed Khan, former director of the Danas Pharmaceutical Company, who obtained 2,500 kg ephedrine quota.
Initially named as accused, Dr Juma and Rizwan Khan turned approvers in July 2012 and alleged the involvement of Makhdoom Shahab, Federal Minister for Textile Industries, Ali Musa Gilani and Federal Secretary Khushnood Lashari.
Legal experts say that under Section 173 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), the names of approvers should be mentioned in Column 6 of the report (challan), which is reserved for the witnesses but the ANF included their names in Column 4 of the challan, which is for an accused on bail.
The case was registered on October 2011 after two pharmaceutical companies — Danas Pharmaceutical Company and Berlax Lab International — were held responsible for obtaining export quotas for the drug in collusion with the Health Ministry officials that exceeded the limits fixed by the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB).
The INCB had fixed a quota of 22,000-kg of ephedrine for Pakistan for 2010-11, but the Ministry of Health allocated a quota of around 31,000 kg.
NNI adds: The ANF has frozen the accounts of Ali Musa Gilani. According to media reports, accounts of four other persons have also been frozen. They include former PM’s wife, daughter and Makhdoom Shahabuddin.
