Court orders facebook block in Pak

Re: Court orders facebook block in Pak

I personally think its a great decision because above everything, our Court and our Govt, for maybe the first time, got together on representing general public sentiments.

If People of Pakistan want FB to be blocked, then it should be blocked, Its not Govt's decision, the decision was taken by the People of our country and we should respect that.

Re: Court orders facebook block in Pak

There is no such thing as unrestricted liberty.

Ever watched western media political shows/news etc? "N" word is banned and media take every precaution to not air "N" word, why? coz it hurts "a specific group of people" (blacks). I wonder whats stopping Media to ban this when it hurts almost 1 billion people?

ditto!

Re: Court orders facebook block in Pak

I think we have be very careful and wise about how to deal with this situation. We can surely ban it or stop logging it or put our head in sand, but that certainly is not an intelligent way to encounter it.
Problem is started in facebook and should be tackled within FB by getting the mass together and hold one opinion, reject and condemn it as strongly as possible. We may be given several logics to keep that alive but we have to come up with better logics to prove how wrong is that!!

Re: Court orders facebook block in Pak

This whole act totally blurs the line between free speech and defamation. Choosing to target a specific figure and drawing caricatures which in effect are ridiculing that person and which are meant to reflect on those who follow the faith he propagated is at the least questionable. Why muslims? Why not any other group or any other means to test the limits of free speech? There are people in the west, as per the comments I read on CNN and Yahoo who see this act as a way to attack the "hateful and intolerant" religion of Islam, that is a means of channeling their anger towards muslims.

At the same time, muslims are only reinforcing the stereotypes these cartoons are intended to generate by reacting emotionally. A more mature and intelligent response is definitely needed.

Re: Court orders facebook block in Pak

I think individually we cannot do much but at this moment when Muslims are going thru so tough time, if govt bans FB, it will be very encouraging for muslims and at the same time a good thappar on faces of ppl who took the matter so easy.

Re: Court orders facebook block in Pak

I don't see what a ban will do. Better response would be to TEACH people to NOT care about this. Giving such stuff so much attention in the past (via rioting, protests etc. ) is why this cartoon day is happening now.

A diplomatic/economic response could also be considered though that also amounts to giving these kinds of things too much attention.

Re: Court orders facebook block in Pak

^ banning fb is a peaceful way... no protests n violence.

Re: Court orders facebook block in Pak

^ But it really amounts to burying your head in the sand like an ostrich! I don't see it therefore it doesn't exist. If only we stop caring about these things, these kind of incidents would stop happening in the first place. ANY kind of attention is BAD.

challo atleast ur not whining about the courts this time :hehe:

While you are right, the comparison isnt quite simple like you made it. You hear the N word all the time, on Rated content in the media, and certainly facebook and other such mediums. Yes, you probably wont see it on the national news airwaves but then again in the U.S. you wouldnt see a national news channel urging a thing as ridiculous as the draw Mohammad Day or anything of that sort. I still think we have eons to go ourselves before we criticize the west for their freedom of speech liberties.

i think everyone is giving this stupid idiotic fb group waay too much importance..i never even knew it existed b4 all this ..

Re: Court orders facebook block in Pak

Banning FB would be a nice idea because it would;

  1. cut down traffic to the site, reducing advertisement revenue
  2. increase productivity at offices and universities
  3. increase awareness about alternatives that are not abusing your privacy.

:hehe:

lets not go into that and agree on disagree

Re: Court orders facebook block in Pak

is that your way of showing to us how modern you are that you cant resist bringing the word Mulla whenever you want to throw insults at someone

Re: Court orders facebook block in Pak

Well once again the Pakistani government are showing what their priorities are.

Hareem has given the best suggestions for a suitable response. There are so many garbage groups on FB. Educate people and spread the word instead of turning this into a fireball …

… and yes, why don’t ban porno sites?

With due respect and adab... The reason the Prophet is not depicted is not a religiously mandated law.

It is simply a tradition established by the early Caliphs to prevent any possibility of humans worshipping the painting or drawing of the Prophet since the Prophet is only a human, and only God can be worshipped.

However, Muslims need to remind themselves that this is simply a tradition of some Arab cultures. It is not an Islamic principle of law. If Muslims or non-Muslims in the modern century want to depict the Prophet that is their right and it is of no concern from an Islamic perspective.

Most learned intellectuals in the Muslim community including aalims know this, but are just scared of facing the hysteria of the illiterate and jaahil mullahs who rule the media headlines.

Please correct .. if wrong

Pakistan doesn't much matter in internet advertising landscape.
