Coup attempt in Qatar could be problem for US
Stratfor, one of the world’s leading private providers of “global intelligence,” reports on its website that the government of Qatar narrowly averted an attempted coup early in October. The coup was prevented when one of its members betrayed the group for money.
The original story on the coup attempt appeared on Arabicnews.com on October 16. The site reports that on Saturday, October 12, “unusual movement” was observed near the US al-Aides air force base. Later that day scores of arrests were carried out at four mosques in Doha. The arrests reportedly targeted Pakistani and Yemeni soldiers in the Qatar army, about half of which is composed of foreign nationals. Some members of the Royal family of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifah al-Thani were also arrested.

Well-informed sources said that the people involved in the coup are presumed to belong to the Islamic [militancy] trends and that many of them have links to Al Qaeda organization. The sources said that these developments coincided with the state of dissatisfaction in the country as a result of the Qatari policy which the sources characterized as supporting an American strike against Iraq.
Qatar’s current position is that it is against a US-led war on Iraq, but it hasn’t ruled out the US using its airbase against Iraq. Stratfor speculated that if Qatar denied the US use of the base, as Saudi Arabia has denied the US use of bases in its country, it would leave the southern flank of an Iraq strategy severely weakened. Meanwhile, the US embassy in Qatar announced Thursday that it has postponed military maneuvers planned for November.

Must be something in our soldiers diet that makes them do coups. :)

Why is everything on planet earth linked to the mysterious al qaidah its getting beyond a joke!

Bali bomber linked to al qaidah
American Sniper linked to al qaidah
Marines getting shot up in kuwait linked to al qaidah

Now coup in qatar linked to al qaidah do you really see a coup in qatar being a threat to american colonial plans in the region NO a coup in saudi arabia a different story if you want to do a coup to make a huge impact on american intrests you do it in somewhere like saudi.

Heard nothing about that. But i am wondering is that how did the coup fail? The people are dissatisfied with the Arab regimes and there would be many within the army ranks who would gladly help out to get a proper Islamic regime. What i suspect is that there were plans for a coup, but not "immediately effective" plans, with no logistics worked out. The US must have picked this up through its network of spies which are extensive in the Islamic world and helped the Qatari govt cut it off. Because if there was a coup with plans and logistic worked out, there is no chance in hell that the Qatari govt would have survived. Plus to note that the American press is no more than a propoganda machine now that believes everything that the US govt states.

ak47: I didn't see any mention of Al-Qaida in the story. I don't think anyone mentioned anything about Al-Qaida in connection with this story. Do you know something or some press report? The full story says that one of the foreigners who was part of the plot ( some lt. col. ) went and ratted on the group for money. The plot was set to go the next day, apparently. CM, you may be right. It could have been a spy, a plant, etc.
