Killings and tortures? I dunno…many with the old guard supported the protests, so if they were that severe Iran would be in the middle of a civil war right now.
The protests died because the hardliners don’t like Ahmedenejad themselves, and quite a few of the protestrs are willing to work in a system they can infact participate in. They have powerful allies.
There are plenty of people who want to upset the system, replace it, but the state has no obligation to pander to their whims, and indeed has the obligation to supress them to ensure the surivival of the political system. This is a universal trait of a governance system.
