I've heard of Istighfar working in many cases.

There is no harm. Nothing is beyond Allah's power; but you should bear in mind that if you are not granted what you pray for, then you may receive a compensation in other way in this life or in the next.
And even if a disease is stated as incurable, it is still worth praying for. A way that a miracle could potentially be delivered is if it turned out that a research breakthrough has just been made and a clinical trial of a cure for the disease, or a means to slow it down, is beginning.
There are many possible ways in which Allah's will can be put into effect.

In addition to post# 4&5 doing istighfar mean that trying to become more muttaqi as in quran if you become muttaqi ALLAH will make way for you.
May ALLAH make it easy for all.
Also reciting durood shareef for 100,000 times is very effective3, i have experianced this as well.

To cure an incurable disease? - One needs a miracle and nothing is too great for Allah (SWT), but the people asking need to be deserving of that favour.
A du'a to console the person who has an incurable disease is a worthwhile du'a to have ... "Pray for the test to be taken away through cure and if cure is not in the destiny then to ask for tawfeeq to handle and manage the disease with dignity and patience and acceptance until the end of ones life"
All the azkar are useful and important - even after cure - continue to make the same azkar ...

The Hadith states: It was narrated from 'Uthman bin Hunaif that a blind man came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and said: "Pray to Allah to heal me." He said: "If you wish to store your reward for the Hereafter, that is better, or if you wish, I will supplicate for you." He said: "Supplicate." So he told him to perform ablution and do it well, to pray two Rak'ah, and to say this supplication: "Allahumma lnni as'aluka wa atawajjahu ilaika bimuhammadin nabiyyir-rahma. Ya Muhammadu inni qad tawajjahtu bika ila rabbi fi hajati hadhihi lituqda. Allahumma fashaffi’hu fiya (O Allah, I ask of You and I turn my face towardsYou by virtue of the intercession of Muhammad the Prophet of mercy. O Muhammad, I have turned to my Lord by virtue of your intercession concerning this need of mine so that it may be met. O Allah, accept his intercession concerning me)"

This dua is NOT to be used for Materialistic needs (RasoolAllah SallAllahu Alaihi wa Alihi wa Sallam was concerned about us chasing the dunya), and it is BETTER if you are patient (leave for afterlife) but the Option has been left open to us**

one must not stop praying in any circumstances . As stated earlier, nothing is beyond the powers of Allah. We have many imperfections in us so ask for mercy from Allah as He is Rahman and Raheem.

Allah ne hii har beemaarii kii shifaa nabaataat aur jaRii booTiyoN meN rakkhii hai jise hameN khoj nikaalnaa hotaa hai.
du'aa ke liye kisii peer faqeer ke paas nahiiN jaanaa chaahiye. Khud se aur dost aHbaab anur aqrabaa kii du'aa hii kaafii hai. Allah ke nek bande dunyaa se chhup ke rahte haiN aur j'ali log apnaa parchaar sar e aam karte haiN.

There is no such thing as "incurable" for the Almighty.
One should make dua no matter what the situation. Even if the dua appears to go unanswered, you will receive the reward for asking and believing that He has the power to help.
