"Could there be a better replacement of my first love ?!" A heart warming true story

Umm Salamah really loved her husband, who was badly injured in Uhud. Just before his Shahadah, once while she was nursing him, he said:

***“****I heard the Messenger of God saying. Whenever a calamity afflicts anyone he should say, ****“Surely from Allah we are and to Him we shall certainly return,” (inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon). And he should pray, “O Lord, give me in return something good from it which only You, Exalted and Mighty, can give."

After her husband died, she remembered the prayer her husband mentioned & began reciting it. Everytime she would recite the initial part of the dua; *“O Lord, with you I leave this my plight for consideratio*n . . .” *she would constantly confront a thought, “Could there anyone be better than Abu Salamah?” and hence could not complete the later part of the dua; … *“O Lord give me something good from it”, *However she kept on trying repeatedly & was finally able to complete the supplication, by the grace & mercy of ALLAH *Subhana wa’ta’aala.

*Muslims were greatly saddened by her plight & was known by the name of “Ayyin al-Arab”–the one who had lost her husband. The tragedy left her all alone in Madinah with small children to take care of. Subsequently, on completion of Iddah (3 months & 10 days), Abu Bakr (r.a) proposed her, but she refused. Then Umar (r.a) put forth the proposal, which she also declined. The Prophet then approached her & she replied:

*O Prophet (saw), I have three traits. I am an extremely jealous woman, I am afraid that you will see in me something that will anger you & cause ALLAH to punish me. I am aged & have a young family.
*
The Prophet replied: *Regarding your jealousy, I pray to ALLAH to let it go away. Regarding age, I am afflicted with the same problem. Regarding the dependent family, your family is my family.
*
They were married & hence Allah answered her prayer by blessing her with partner better than Abu Salamah. From that day onwards Hind al Makhzumiyah was no longer the mother of Salamah alone but became the mother of all believers, UMM AL-MU’MINEEN.

The dua is:

***Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun. Allahumma ujurni fi musibati, wakhluf li khairan minha

(We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah! Compensate me in my affliction, recompense my loss and give me something better in exchange for it),

** Whoever recites this, Allah surely compensates him with reward and a better substitute.

Duwa is never rejected by Allah, it fulfills in one of following ways

  • accept
  • grant better than what was actually asked
  • stop possible difficulties/calamity in life
