Could it be?

That plastic bags are more environmentally friendly that cloth bags? This study mainly focuses on CO2 emission per plastic or cloth bag. The last para mentions in passing the effect on fish in the ocean.

So Is biodegradable plastic the better option than cloth bag. What say you Op1, Op2 and the rest of you all?

Not enough data looking at this news article. I am not convinced. Total production impact and total disposal impact has to be viewed. We may not know everything. Hopefully they will release the report while it’s findings are relevant and not dated

Otherwise there were studies decades ago propping foam as a good thing to aid in decomposition of stuff in landfills due to air content of foam.

Re: Could it be?

biodegradable plastic bags are the best.

Re: Could it be?

California banned *single-use *plastic bags last week, a move that was generally hailed by environmentalists but some media outlets pointed out the U.K. Environment Agency report mentioned in the Telegraph article above, suggesting that it may not be so environmentally friendly after all.

What I’ve read elsewhere is that the same study also assessed other types of reusable bags, namely low-density polyethylene bags and non-woven polypropylene bags. And both of these need to be reused fewer than about 15 times to have a lower environmental impact on climate change than the normal single-use plastic bag, which is also known as high-density polyethylene bag. So apparently there are other alternatives to paper bags and cotton bags as well. But IMO so long as it’s a good quality cotton bag, even if it has to be reused multiple 100+ times or so, it’s worth it.
