i was just reading this piece on cricinfo where they have described the unbelieveable wins and here is a quote from it.

The Faisalabad dead rubber turned out to be a shoot-out between Chris Pringle and Waqar Younis. Pringle, who later admitted to tampering with the ball because he was sure Pakistan were doing it, took 7 for 52 as Pakistan collapsed for 102. Waqar returned the favour with 7 for 76 but New Zealand acquired a 115-run lead. Shoaib Mohammad’s 142 in the second innings helped Pakistan wipe off the deficit and set a target of 243. Aaqib Javed ensured that New Zealand’s top-order struggled and Waqar blasted the lower-middle order to finish with 12 wickets and give Pakistan victory by 65 runs.

Re: Could a Pakistani have escaped this easily .....?
I never have seen anybody getting punished for ball tempering, surely not during those early days...
Its media hype, and ofcourse free media of western countries is much stronger and they talk to audience in own country...
Let me clarify, I meant that picking on subcontinent bowlers right or wrong was media hype created by western media. While if British bowler did it was justified and wasn’t hyped up that much…
I am not getting into disucssion whether somebody tampered the ball or not at this point…
