Among many purpose of such cough syrups which contains some percentage (little) of alcohol, that its effectively kills gems instantly, one don’t suffer from fever or high flue at night, no headache and feel relaxation while sleeping. That is why doctors recommend it. Some tablets for ‘cold’ also contains little amount of alcohol too.
We can have alcohol free cough syrups too if we just ask the pharmacist.
Back to the topic whether use of cough syrups which contains alcohol is halaal or haraam? if the alcohol which is used in cough syrups drived from grapes than its usage is haraam otherwise it can be used. I might be wrong but that much I know.
I myself prefer ‘Joshanda’ and/or honey with ‘adrak’ (desi treatment) rather than it.

There is 10% alcohol in NyQuil, not little. In comparison, beer has about 6% I think. And that Alcohol is there to make you sleep, cause that is the best cure for cold and cough.
