Is it permissable to drink cough syrup with alcohol? I get an occasional cough due to allergies and I want to know if its islamically acceptable to consume the one containing alcohol. I’ve been told its okay as long as the intention is for healing, but I don’t want to be wrong…
Re: cough syrup

Re: cough syrup

Re: cough syrup

Re: cough syrup
I just use whatever is at home, we have Nyquil. I can try alternative a but this was suggested by the doctor.
Re: cough syrup
Peace polished gems,
Among many purpose of such cough syrups which contains some percentage (little) of alcohol, that its effectively kills gems instantly, one don't suffer from fever or high flue at night, no headache and feel relaxation while sleeping. That is why doctors recommend it. Some tablets for 'cold' also contains little amount of alcohol too.
We can have alcohol free cough syrups too if we just ask the pharmacist.
Back to the topic whether use of cough syrups which contains alcohol is halaal or haraam? if the alcohol which is used in cough syrups drived from grapes than its usage is haraam otherwise it can be used. I might be wrong but that much I know.
I myself prefer 'Joshanda' and/or honey with 'adrak' (desi treatment) rather than it.
Almighty Allah knows best.

There is 10% alcohol in NyQuil, not little. In comparison, beer has about 6% I think. And that Alcohol is there to make you sleep, cause that is the best cure for cold and cough.
Re: cough syrup
Peace TLK,
What does it means> Is't haraam or halaal?
Re: cough syrup
Alcohol was banned only because people drinking wine were losing their senses and commiting sins. Unless you drink a half bottle of nyquil which I hope you don't and then again take it only for medicianal reasons, I don't see how drinking wine and taking a spoon of nyquil can rate the same. And on top of that the stuff about alcohol from grapes vs alcohol from potato!
If you ask suchquestions some people are just waitimng for an opportunity to rub their beards and exhibit their scholarly knowledge of the Universe. They will start quoting hadees and start interpreting and get into what happened when kaleefa-al-mucus got a cold! Or may be that's what you are doing when you get bored and get these scholars all worked up!
Just take the medicine and drink a lot of liquids. You and God have a lot of other things to worry about.
Re: cough syrup
Peace Jamal Sharif,
You mean one or few spoons of alcohol mixed with Half or one glass full of soda or pepsi for whatever purpose is halaal?
Re: cough syrup
Ok this is from web
The alcohol in NyQuil, according to Proctor and Gamble, is used to keep the three active ingredients in a solution. They are ingredients that normally would not mix, and so without the alcohol the liquid would not remain stable.

I am not here to pronounce any halaal or haraam. You do what you want, I am just saying taking nyquil which is a medicine is not an issue, should not be an issue and making it an issue is just providing a chance for certain so called scholars to jus wax eloquent and provide pompous decrees
Re: cough syrup
Peace Jamal Sharif,
Leave those scholars a side and lets talks like two ordinary friends/brothers talks about something :).
I say a 'muslim' should know about that any food which he or she is going to eat is not contained any 'haraam' thing. By sying 'nyquil' as medicine without knowing its contain 'halaal' or 'haraam' ingredients is like saying 'meat' as 'meat' without knowing whether knowing its 'pork meat' of cotains 'pork' ingredients.
That's my point now plz tell me how you explain above :)
