yes, it is a requirement for a valid sajda as per Hanafi maslak at least. your elbow and forearm should not be resting on the carpet either. these guidelines are for a valid sajda…if you lack, well…Allah will forgive you if you don’t know about it…but, one should learn to do the namaaz correctly.
