I really like the name Isa for a baby boy. I am confused on the best way to spell it though?
Should it be Isa, Esa or Eesa? If I spell it Isa, then I run the risk of people pronouncing it like “Is” “Ah” and if I spell it like Esa then I run the risk of people pronouncing it like the “E” sound from Esso gas station. That is why I am thinking of Eesa. The double EE sound is the proper way the beginning of the name should be pronounced. The only thing is, I have never seen it spelt this way.
Any suggestions? What do you think is the best way to spell this name?
I have spelled both our kids name phonetically even though not a lot of people spell it that way in the Muslim world. It makes it easier for people to pronounce it. I would spell it as eesa ., not a lot of margin for error.
I’ve seen it spelt Eesa before, but personally I don’t like it because it looks ‘untidy’.
In my family we spell a family member’s name Isa; once you tell your friends/teachers/colleagues etc how to say it once, they will continue to say it the way it’s supposed to be pronounced. It’s not really that big a deal.
^ the problem is with people who are not friends, teachers or colleagues. sometimes, you may not recognize your own name if it’s called out. you may not remember to recognize your name as AIZA [Isa]…it’s a problem with certain names.
My son has the same name and we spell it ESSA. Just how they do it in Muslim countries. I also didn’t like how Eesa looks. I am okay with correcting people. Sari zindagi apna bhi to naam correct kia hai.
I went through the same issue when I had my son. I was going to spell it Eesa but really didn’t like the way it looked! After days and days of thinking I finally settled for Isa. He is 2 now and I love the spelling and am happy with my decision. ..it really suits him and the name looks so beautiful. When he is older I’m sure he will be very happy with the spelling. ..especially compared to Eesa! IMHO if ppl say it wrong then THEY need to educate themselves!
Honestly, its SO annoying. Mine gets butchered every time I run into anyone new to the point where if we have to order takeout or go to Starbucks, I tell people my name is Kate
its just not worth the initial pronounciation, then the correction, then the spelling it out, and then they spell it or say it wrong anyway after all of that!
For those of you saying that we can correct ppl , I sat at my graduation not knowing my name was called out and kept wondering why they weren’t calling me out only to realize that my name was being butchered. It has been butchered by my professors, at the doctor’s office, and many other places. It isn’t about being their problem or my problem, our names are different in North America and if we spell them phonetically we make our lives and their lives easier by one more thing. We also avoid Nauman becoming a Newman, or Ismail becoming Ishmael. Earlier on I used to correct everyone everywhere on my name, now I just don’t care and say whatever…
I haven’t had that issue with my kids, and have never had to correct anyone. For me that makes mine and my kids lives easier because names do mean a lot …
^ I was going to say the same thing…after umpteen years of having your name mispronounced, how do you not know you’re being called…especially at your graduation? You would be following the person in front of you anyway, as it’s alphabetized, no?
