Anyone save their child’s cord blood?
I am seeing ads for it everywhere…wondering if someone has actually done this?

Cord Blood
No, we never did.
Re: Cord Blood
We didn’t. It has a very limited shelf life, and usability as well is limited to very specific treatments- Or at least that’s what I understood from when we looked into it.
Re: Cord Blood
And it would be stored in the hospital, right? I have heard that you have to a hefty yearly fee for storage.
Re: Cord Blood
No, it’s stored at an outside facility. Usually the company that harvests the blood- in toronto, Insception is the name of the company at all the hospitals. But yes, the storage fees are what you pay for primarily.
Re: Cord Blood
Hmm, so maybe it’s not the blood I’m thinking of then? I recall that we were talking Bout this at work when one of the teachers was pregnant and it was said that it was stored in the hospital and the fee in the thousands maybe. Perhaps it was placenta or stem cells that were being discussed.
Re: Cord Blood
I read about it a lot but we never did it.As SGC said,my understanding was that too that its use was limited. It is not stored at the hospital, but at some cord blood banking facility and they do charge a hefty fee for that.
Re: Cord Blood
we are not going to bank the cord blood. my husband says the use is very limited as of now. we might donate it if that can be arranged.
Re: Cord Blood
we donated ours. these days they are making stem cells out of all kinds of tissue, highly unlikely the child will need his/her cord blood later.
Re: Cord Blood
We donated ours.
Re: Cord Blood
I didn’t know you could do that! What is the process and where does the donated blood go?
Re: Cord Blood
you need to check with the hospital if they have a process to collect and hand over the cold blood to a public cord blood bank. most big hospitals do this for free. afaik, it goes for leukemia treatment.
Re: Cord Blood
I donated the cord blood for both of my kids. The first hospital did not have a donation bank but there is a company called Cyrobanks that sends a collection box to the hospital for free. You just have to tell the doctor to collect it.
The second hospital had their own bank and the cord blood went there.
I was so happy that both my kids started their life off by helping someone.
Re: Cord Blood
I gave birth at the trillium and they asked me after birth if I would do it and gave me a form to sign . That was it.
Re: Cord Blood
I’m definitely going to look into this! Thanks guys! What a great idea!
Re: Cord Blood
did you tell the doctor before going to the hospital or after you went in for labor? i would like to donate too, not sure how its done.
Re: Cord Blood
I told the doctor beforehand during one of my check ups. She made a note in my file in case another doctor in the group delivered me. How it works is I called Cyrobanks during my last trimester. They want you to call before the third trimester but I begged them to accept me and they did. They sent me a registration form in the mail and I sent it back. They told me to call me when I went into labor and the name of the hospital, which I did. The company was in Florida and I am in the Midwest, but it still worked. A DHL guy delivered a special box to the hospital which contained the cord blood donation kit and I reminded the doc again during delivery and she said that she saw it in my file ( but I am anal like that). She used the cord blood kit to collect the kit and the box was sent back by the hospital. No fee was charged by the doctor. I guess the hospital informs DHL and they recollect the box.
In the second case the hospital provided the form and kit but in any case I had to pre register at the hospital.
Re: Cord Blood
Google cord blood donation banks. Yours might even be more sought after due to the unique genetic mix of the baby.
