Cord blood banking

How many of you went for this option or are planning to go for it?
I knew about it and on my last visit to the OB I was given some brochures and informative material to help make up our minds.

Those who did it and those who did not, what were your thoughts exactly?

Re: Cord blood banking

i so wanted to do it but my hubby didn't agree and i didn't wanna decide it alone but i still regret it.

Re: Cord blood banking

^If you dont mind my asking and only if you are comfortable answering this, why do you regret not doing it?
Why was your husband against it?

Re: Cord blood banking

if u hav read that brochure u might already know that cord has the stem cells which can save a person from many diseases later in life. now once the cord is gone u can't do anything. it's a way to keep ur family save from Allah forbids koi dangerous disease lug jaaiy.
y he was against it? his thought" sub Allah k haath main hai", "goron k paisay bananay k tareeqay hain" he never researched the topic deeply.
i regret it coz i'm seeing some kids around us developing leukimia and other cancers. i get scared. Allah reham keray.

Re: Cord blood banking

We did. It was expensive - about 1200 dollars for the collection and transport and then $100 yearly fee for cryogenic storage.

We thought it a good idea.

Re: Cord blood banking

Mabrook:Yes I know the objectives of cord blood banking.I just thought that maybe God forbid, you guys had come across something to actually use it.Sorry about that.

Mama:Yes it is expensive.I was told $2000 at the time of collection and then $250/year.

Re: Cord blood banking

Nomad, that seems a bit pricey. You can shop around. The company I used is called ViaCord.

Re: Cord blood banking

Yeah maybe if we decide to go for it we will shop around a bit.

I did read up on it, and the chances of needing it for our own use are so miniscule we do not plan to bank our baby's cord blood. Our hospital has a cord blood donation program, though, where you can donate it so it can be available for others who might need it; obviously you don't have to pay for the storage, etc. So we do plan to donate our baby's cord blood.

I'd rather use the extra money to start a college fund. :)
