Not sure what the problem is but here’s the situation:
Operating System: Windows Vista
Software: Roxio CD Creater Basic 9.0
I have the “System Recovery DVD” for windows Vista and I would like to burn a copy of that DVD that I can use in case I lose the original or it becomes unusable. Using the Roxio program, I click on “Copy Disc”. On the other side of the window, it has 2 steps:
Insert the CD you wish to copy from. Roxio will copy the data on your computer and will then ask you for blank media.
When prompted, enter the blank media to burn and click “Continue”
Well, I insert the data DVD and hit continue, it reads the disc and after about 5-7 minutes, it automatically ejects the disc. It does not prompt me to insert the blank DVD. So I enter the blank DVD myself as the original has been ejected. Nothing happens when I click continue.
I know the program needs a patch because I get some script error on the welcome screen. I tried to install the patch using the download given to me by HP. That doesn’t install. I don’t care. The point is to burn that DVD data disc. I have also tried installing a couple of “DVD Copier” programs and they can’t read the data disc as it’s not video, it’s system recovery files. I have also tried downloading a couple of CD copier programs, they can’t copy the disc either as they see it as DVD, not a CD.
Any idea what should be done and if anything can be done, which program should be used? I haven’t tried Nero yet but I am thinking that the system recovery disc may be “non-copyable”?
Well I tried a CD copier and a DVD copier. DVD copier can't copy it because it's not "video" as it doesn't see any more video files. CD copier can't copy it as it is not songs/size is in Gigs, not Megs. I guess I am going to have to try my brother's computer when he visits us next weekend. I was hoping may be someone has been through this (burning system recovery DVDs) and can recommend a program so that I can go download/purchase that.
Tried that as well. The image has been captured on the hard drive. Now when I go back to burn the image, nothing happens. I am 99.99% sure it's due to the missing patch, but the problem is that the patch I got from HP doesn't work; It gives me an error message saying that this patch is not valid for the version that you have installed on your computer. I think I shouldn't rely on HP, I need to look for the patch myself that will work.
Use UltraISO and dump everything to an .iso file, this also preserves the bootability of that DVD. Then use any burner (I recommend Nero, I haven't been much of a Roxio fan lately) to burn that image to DVD.
Tofibaba - Downloaded and Saved the CD as an .iso file using UltraISO. Now the problem is that the size of that ISO file is 5.13GB while the DVD RW disc has only up to 4.7GB space on it. I tried to compress the iso file and it saved it as isz file. 1) the UltraISO burner doesn't recognize it as a valid file to burn and 2) the size of that compressed file is still more than the space available.
I never used that Vista DVD which came with the System (for first couple of weeks it was sitting on PC now I have no idea where it is). I restored my PC last week from a separate partition which was created by manufacturer and it holds everything ie system and drivers.
^ I did that when I restored my system for the first time. Then the hard drive crashed. They sent me a brand new hard drive and it was not partitioned. It was completely blank. I had to install even the basic things such as the desktop icons and everything using the recovery CD.
Here’s an update on my situation
I chatted with HP and asked for help. The dumb technician tried to help be and everything she suggested, I had already done it. She then told me to search for upperfilter and lowerfilter in the registry and delete those. Sounded suspicious but I did it anyway. After deleting about 3-4 upper filter, they still kept coming up. I was like hmmmm this is strange. In the meanwhile, windows had finished updating the windows and asked me to restart the system. I did and after that I couldn’t get in the system. I had to reformat the drive once more.
So I spent all my evening yesterday formatting and reinstalling my custom programs etc. Now I just burned a CD and Roxio program works fine
However, I still would like to know the answer to the dual layer DVD option that Asif has asked.
I would turn on the computer, it will show a blue screen for even less than a second (no chance of reading even a letter of the error message) and wouldn't let me in. She said "open registry, go to edit, find, "upperfilter" and delete the "upperfilter" keys. She didn't say find them in the roxio folder or anything, just said find upper and lower filters and delete them.
I don't think I have the double layer dvd rom, I have the regular one. oh well.
Those errors can be easily repaired by restoring the registery from backup folder. A copy of registery files is kept under system32 in the config folder but then you are using vista so I could be wrong.
You got another DVD like any regular DVD? Try copying that... if that goes well, then we know our problem is most likely the double layer dvd rom.
Dual layer doesn’t mean 2 sides, it means the DVD has 2 layers on the same side and the lasers can read/write on both of those layers. Most players can read (e.g. low cost, regular video DVD players) it but not all can write, although they are becoming increasingly common.
Now that I have formatted windows again, I copied a disc yesterday and it copied fine. So it was some software error that has been resolved now. Now the DVD doesn’t copy but that’s because of size issues. As for registry files, not sure if there’s a way to restore them (BIOS etc.) when you can’t even access windows? The computer used to automatically restart before even trying to open windows. The only thing I could access was the BIOS. It didn’t matter whether I chose to start windows normally, or last known good configuration, or safe mode, whatever I chose, it crashed and restarted itself right after chose any option.
I have a HP Pavillion DV9205US (don’t have it with me at the moment) and I am fairly certain it supports double layer. I am gonna have to check that when I get it back from my brother because if it does, buying a double layer DVD to write on would be the way to go.
