Copycat Singers

This guy Naeem Abbas Rufi, has styled himself on the great NFAK and has been performing in the UK singing some of his old songs. Now as a bit of live entertainment, it works as he has a good voice and can pull it off pretty well. But would anybody really want to buy a recorded version?

Rufi himself says he is keeping the memory of NFAK alive but I’m not sure I like the idea of a singer living on somebody else’s work, copying his style and his mannerisms. If he really wants to make a name for himself he’ll have to develop his own stuff sooner or later IMO.

I agree. He ought to use his voice to develope his own style of music. This guy came out first in this act called "gangey" , meaning bald-people. And his hit song that was on the charts was a comedic "Hum hai gangey". I thought at the time that with some creative thought and that great voice of his , he could make it real big.

But, his whole NFAK act has killed him actually. I hear that in Pakistan, he pulls in a big audience and he mesmerizes pple a lot. But the NFAK thing goes only so far. He better create an identity for himself. Personally I would not buy his rehashed versions of NFAK songs, unless his music is really good, which its not. Its like someone buying an elvis-presley wannabe's music...it just doesn't work that way.
